Deepest Blue Posts: 900 Feb 6 06 10:01 PM	Les, I have less recordings by Willie Banks and the Messengers, but it's a good idea to listen to the Messenger's "Pressing Toward the Mark.."/Malaco MCD 4471, 1995. Banks had passed when the Messengers recorded this CD. Just put it on the CD-player.

Posts: 2554 Feb 6 06 10:08 PM	Oops...I just noticed that a review was requested. These are two very good albums. Both have a stellar line up of backing players. On the Clarke album I'm introduced to John Marx Markowski. Man, where's this cat been hiding?! (Thus the yikes) He leaves you wondering - how's Bill gonna follow this guy? Of course Bill answers that question very quickly! This disc is a must have. Snooky I've never listened to before. I was quite impressed. Sounds like a man playing that harp. Some very cool slide guitar by Derek also. No note too small My Space Truckbody Jones

Deepest Blue Posts: 1205 Feb 7 06 7:01 PM	Started listening to 'The Southern Sons' Deep South Gospel on the Trumpet label. Frankly I'm still just listening and letting it soak in. I can't comment on the quality of the music although it's sounding good to me. Semi-seriously I have found a Blues/Gospel link in that Cliff Givens of the S/Sons sang the bass line on Sonny Boy's 'Mighty Long Time'. Not exactly the sort of link I was looking for, but fun anyway. Steve

Earle Hines; Specialty SPCD-7054-2, 1994. I can't imagine anybody interested in fine singing not being impressed by Brother Joe May's voice.

Deepest Blue Posts: 900 Feb 13 06 10:48 PM	This evening the Radio Four "There's Gonna Be Joy", Nashboro CDCHD 448, 1993. The Babb Brothers sound a bit rough but I like them. Morgan Babb's guitar playing also is simple. Those tracks had been recorded between 1955 and 1965. By the way, Morgan Babb is still living in Nashville and has a regular radio programe. "How Much I Owe Him" is one of my favourites. Bernd

Deepest Blue Posts: 900 Feb 15 06 9:21 PM	After listening to the Voices of East Harlem and the Choir of the Operation PUSH, both projects with young Blacks out of the late sixties and early seventies and both choirs singing in a fresh juvenile way, I'm now listening to: The Swanee Quintet: "What About Me / Anniversary Album", 2 LPs on 1 CD, Nashboro / ace CDCHD 432, 1992. The Swanees' sound very funky as a result of their guitar player William Crawford. I also like the different styles of their great leads. While Johnny Jones sings in a beautiful tenor voice, Rev. Ruben Willingham is one of great hard leads in quartet. All 24 tracks had been recorded between 1953 and 1962. Bernd
