Any favorites ? Right now I dig Hurry Down Sunshine and Mean Mistreater Mama. I don't have all his stuff yet but I'd like to hear favorites or better songs than the one I mentioned. I think I'll go for Leroy Carr VOl 4 on Document cause it has songs that I like that I know from compilations, so the other songs are from the same period with my favorites - all chances that I'll like those too !

The new (this year) Sony double CD collection has the best sound I've heard yet on Leroy's songs.

In addition to the songs you name, I especially like Midnight Hour Blues. And for a change of pace, the gimmicky songs Bobo Stomp and Papa's on the Housetop offer a relatively rare look at Leroy in an uptempo setting.

My favorite is In The Evening When The Sun Go Down, because up to now that was the only song I know he wrote. I never heard him do it himself, bu on a cover by Big Bill Broonzy, Broonzy cites Carr as the composer.

Hurry down sunshine is a big favourite of mine. Carr isn;t a big favourite of mine really, but "My Old Pal Blues" by Scrapper is one of my all-time favourite tracks. That man was an all-time great guitarist.

I lost the ability to access the forum since last September and thought it had disappeared! Glad to be back.
I just love Leroy Carr and Scrapper. My all time favourite of any blues tune is Midnight Hour Blues; I learned a great version for the guitar from Dave Van Ronk and it has become a staple of mine.

"It's Too Short" has been a staple of many a nighttime drinking excursion into pure hokum...."I really like your Seaburg but your tune is too short"....That's what she said to me last night! Fortunately I learned a long time ago "What's that Tastes Like Gravy?" My real claim to lovin' fame!

Seaburg was the name of the old time jukeboxes pronounced "Seabird" in southern black dialect because that's the way it comes out in places like Clarksdale, Mississippi...The juke box I mention in my last Bar B Que Bob message on this forum was a beautifully refurbed wooden "Seabird"....Pronounced "Seaburg" in Pennsylvania...

I do think that my real favorite Carr tune though is "Midnight Hour Blues", so spooky and perfect, really...I heard Larry Johnson do it about 35 years ago at Philadelphia Folk Festival and that was really lovely, too...

Agreed. BTW, that Leroy Carr song is a cover of a Sparks Brothers recording from two years before, which is itself absolutely superb.

It's on this CD with the best sound:

However, Hans (J.A.W.) much later turned me on to the two Magpie CDs, which are light years ahead of the Sony set sonically. Highly, highly recommended.

I didn't buy Volume 1 since it's heavily duplicated by the old Magpie Leroy Carr LP ('Piano Blues, Vol. 7'). But Volume 2 has several tracks that I didn't have, so I bought it and it is *very* good.

There are still some used copies of both #1 & #2 available on Amazon. But it's OOP and well on its way to being a collector's item. So grab it now!

Marvel, I dig "Mean Mistreatin' Mama" as well. Man, I dig all of Leroy's stuff, and his piano work never fails to send me. Ah, the 1930s! Imagine him coming into your parlor and pickin' those keys - pickin' them until they reach a breaking point. Simply heavenly, man.

Yeah, ya know Fred, listening to those Leroy Carr- Scrapper Blackwell records really kicks it! I had the great fortune of growing up with a great piano player named Greg Burgess...We started playing together for functions and coffee houses in high school, and those records were one of the things we worked on..Greg trashed my Mama's piano, cracked the soundboard, broke Mama's heart...You can hear every note of Scrapper's guitar slamming against that fretboard, to...I know from experience in a hundred living rooms and piano bars playing acoustic like that is hell on a set of strings...I ain't cryin' over it though! Truth is that over all these years of playing that kind of stuff (and listening to other people, too) I've never heard anybody get quite that sound with an electric guitar or any sort of acoustic transducer pickup... Pure and sincere jubilation is what I call it...
