Well alot of you all probally heard of these sessions , im sure there alot who have not , this guy named Jay Miller down in crowley , La. started a small recording studio ! he had the basic recording equipment , nothing fancy , i think he started in 1953 , at this time there was a goldmine of great mucians every-where in southern loisiana !!! all of them thirsty for whiskey , beer And wine , so jay wold pay them little or nothing to record ! Jay would even buy all the rights to the songs so many great songs are owned by Jay ,get them out of jail !!!!! some of the people he recorded were Slim Harpo , Lazy lester , lonesome sundown, leroy washington , lightin slim , guitar gable !!!! if you have never heard any of these folks , i garantee all good !!!! this is some of the best swamp blues ever recorded !!!!! i have nearly all of these sessions , killer stuff !!!!! teebee

Is Jay still alive? One of my only regrets in life, was meeting him, and not recording in his studio. He wasn't asking much, but I was completly busted. Walter

then perhaps *you* are the one to fill a few gaps I had to leave in my (fragments of) a Flyright discography ... ?!? (at least concerning the Legendary Jay Miller Sessions up to Vol. 57)

hi stephan , loved your collection , heres what i have vol ..............4,6,7,8,10.12,16,20,25,27, !!!! thanks for the flyright information , i have a few others on the flyright label ... you cant go wrong with this label .... the lightin slim is very good stuff , i actually like all , i made a cd just mixing up each artist with all my favorites . i think there was a guitar gable session maybe ? i have 2 of these if you would like to trade ? this lightin slim is very very good

heres a good lazy lester , the good thing about the flyright label is they did not put out any bad stuff . i have always tried to get as many on that label as possible ! do they still sell records ? i would love to get some more of that good stuff , back before cds , i was a record junkie im glad i got them while the gettin was good ...i do not know if jay miller is alive still , i had a video about him that showed all about the sessions , radio fix-it shop / studio !!!! so they had 57 sessions ? teebee

King Karl, the singer on all that Guitar Gable stuff, is one of my neighbors and we have done some gigs and recordings together. He wants to go back in the studio and do an album of new and old material, but there's no money and few prospects for somebody picking it up...hope we can swing something.

Maybe he had a version of "This Should Go On Forever"---

but the original hit song was recorded by Rod Bernard.

King Karl died this morning, fellas. I feel real bad about it---he was a very nice guy and a great singer. I'm sorry I didn't get it together for him before he passed.

he use to sell records in front and had the studio in the back. The T birds were telling me about it one night when we all were gathered in the parking lot of the austin opera house. Everyone would show up there after gigs, in their hot rods. Kim Wilson, and I were the oddballs. I drove old cadillacs, and he old vw bugs

Jay Miller died about 10 years ago.
I have mixed feelings about the man.
Without him, we probably had never heard of swamp blues (I think he gave it that name) and all of its great performers.
On the other hand, we could blame it on the lack of money the fact that he payed the artists only for the recording sessions, and just a handfull of bucks, sometimes just a bottle of booze. But he did co-signed quite a few of their songs he probably never wrote a note or a word of, so he would get the royalties when the artists wouldn't. It's not only unfair, it's dishonest too.
For the anecdote, he gave most the artists who first recorded for him their nicknames, sometimes without even letting them know. They would find out once the record was out.

heres a cool lonesome sundown !!! Rene , in those days if you were black , you had no rights in america, the majority hated all blacks and there music !! it least jay knew the stuff was swingin and cool and had a little knowledge of recording in my opinion thats jay miller sessions are some of the best swamp blues stuff ever !! the artist had a choice to record or not !!!!! i wonder if jay miller died a rich man ???? i have not seen any reissues of anything jay miller sessions ether , have you ? teebee

I see your point, but it still bothers me.
Like I said, without him, I would have never heard Slim Harpo, Lazy Lester, Lonesome Sundown and all the great swamp bluesmen.
I just wish he would have been fair to the artists.
I think it's important to consider those things, otherwise, we wouldn't have a Music Maker Foundation today.

Anyway, I'm sure there were CD re-issue of the Excello sides, I have a few of them, Various Artists compilations or by artist compilations.

Karl wrote "This Should Go On Forever" and recorded it first for Jay Miller...who put it on the shelf. It wasn't released until after Bernard put out his version...which is pretty lame compared to Karl with Gable's band.
