I picked the 1st volume (old recommendation by JoD) and I'm curious if anyone has the 2nd or 3rd, are those as good as the first ?

I didn't know you could buy them other than as a triple set, so yes, go ahead and buy Vols 2 and 3 MM. Vol3 features Johnny Shines' first recordings in about 10 years, having quit the business in disgust in the 50s.

There is a box set containing all three of the chicago/the blues/today! discs. I have this boxset and it's great!!! A must have in my opinion.

I was lucky enough to find this set used for a mere $13! This is a classic, must have purchase! BTW, "box set" is something of a misnomer. The set I bought was all three discs in a cardboard sleeve. Excellent accompanying booklet though.

If I could have only one volume in this series, it would have to be volume 3. Big Walter Horton blows smoke all the way through it. Johnny Young and Johnny Shines are at the top of their respective games. Good, good blues.

Like Island Blues I picked up the 3 disc econo set in the cardboard sleeve for, I think, the same price. It's definitely worth having all three no matter how you get 'em. Back in my college years I spent many a drunken weekend with the LPs thanks to a party buddy and cherish that music to this day.

Gotta be volume 2, with Otis Rush doing that smokin' verison of Mean Old World and 'Everything's Going to Be Alright. James Cotton as "The Jimmy Cotton Blues Quartet" and homesick james doing Dust my Broom. I got the three-cd sleeve for about 20 bucks at A&B Sound in Canada.

When it comes to harmonica Big Walter was my man!! He tore it up big time on this collection. This 3-disc set is must have for any serious collector of blues!

Thanks for the comments. I think I'll go for the 2nd first, reserving the one that was recommended as the best by most, the 3rd, to the end so I'll feel it's getting better

And who knows maybe I'll prefare the 2nd over the 3rd ? I'm curious myself !

I can't recommend this highly enough. As has been mentioned, the three-disc digipak set in cardboard foldout format is the way to go on this, and if anyone were to look around for it used, it'd more than likely be cheaper than buying the three individual discs. The added bonus to having it as it's available now? Expanded liner notes from Ed Ward and Sam Charters in a 46 page booklet with great photos.

In 1965, the small number of blues artists who were lucky enough to still be recording were primarily doing singles for the record-buying public while 99.9% of the blues albums that were out were reissues. Hoodoo Man Blues on Delmark from Junior Wells and Johnny Young & His Chicago Blues Band on Arhoolie represent the first two albums recorded as complete projects, and although Chicago / The Blues / Today! from Sam Charters delivers only four-to-six tracks from each of the featured artists, it was purposely recorded that way to display the wide variety of what was happening in Chicago at the time.

Some may disagree, but for me, the Otis Rush sides on Volume 2 are his greatest recorded work since the Cobra years. James Cotton gives a killer small-group blues set with Spann, Pee Wee Madison, and SP Leary, and Homesick James is fantastic as well.

All of the discs are great, though - the Junior stuff is in the same killer vein as "It's My Life Baby" and "Hoodoo Man Blues" (and it's got Buddy, Jack Meyers, and Below - the best complete lineup of the three records), it's always great to hear Big Walter, and Spann's brilliant as always.

This brings back some very fond memories, esp. the VOL. w/ Johnny Shines and Big Walter, I'm gonna' have to do a little searchin' and shoppin'. Isn't Walter wearing some nice head gear on the cover? Must have been a cold day in Chicago when they shot that one!

One of the first things I did when I got to Chicago was buy one of those hats because of Walter; who could resist? You may be thinking of the cover of the Arhoolie album, though. (See below for disclaimer about my memory!)

I agree that the Otis Rush stuff is great on vol. 2. When Jim O'Neal and I interviewed him for Living Blues about 30 years ago, his main complaint was that he had a bad cold that day. That may be why he cut two instrumentals; he said he also did a version of "Motorin' Along." There may have been an amplifier problem, too. It also turned out later that the drummer and bassist who were hiding behind pseudonyms were Ernie Gatewood and Jesse Green; Bob Koester took pictures at the session. Otis also told me once that he wished he'd let Sax Crowder blow more that day, which surprised me because although he sounded great, he did have solos on three (if my memory serves me well, increasingly questionable) songs as it was.

That's a fantastic album too. Who would have thought the combination of Young and Walter Horton with Jimmy Dawkins would work, but somehow it did.

Nobody said about J.B. Hutto. Okay, it's on the cd I already have, and I was quiet but I wanna say I really would be surprised in case it'll get better. Hutto really surprised me on this cd with his quality.
