I miss him so much !!!! last night without thinking , went out and bought the montruex 82 and 85 dvd , watching this really made me so sad to relize this great guitar player had left us , later relizing it was his birthday , i found this old picture from 78 , the girl in the picture is my sister carolyn !!! she dated tommy shannon for a while !! my new wife from Russia had never heard or seen him , she watch the video and could not believe the power of this young man from texas . i let her listen to Stevies, rivera paradise another side of stevie , she was so sad that he had died !!! we both were in tears, listening to family style !!! we still have his music and jimmy !!!! if it wasnt for the Vaughans , i would have never have knew nothing about the black blues music !!! thanks Stevie and Jimmy for showing the world what blues is all about !!!!! also a big thanks to the backbone of stevie , the bigger than life Doyle Bramhall who gave Stevie his great vocals and soulful sound , stevie never made a move without Doyles advice (very true ) scotty

I understand the emotions. Recently I went on a SRV binge and listed to and watched DVD of his music for about 5 days straight. I wrote a bit about the emotion that hit me in my blues blog here: http://jeffinkorea.blogs.com/blues/2005/07...e_ray_vaug.html

Here is an excerpt:

I was watching the DVD titled "A Tribute To Stevie Ray Vaughan." That DVD contains a song written by Art Neville titled "Six Strings Down" performed live by blues and jazz greats Jimmie Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Dr. John, and Art Neville.

As I watched and listened to Jimmie Vaughan's smooth vocals launch into the incredibly touching song about his six-string guitar-playing brother's tragic death in a downed helicopter after a concert at Alpine Valley in August 1990, backed up by Clapton and Guy, who were also at that last SRV concert, and other great musicians, I did something that I have not done while listening to music in a long time. I cried.

I choke up now, just reading the lyrics to that song. They lyrics are:

Yes Oct. 3 is SRV birthday. I plan on listening to SRV all day long. He was a special person with a real gift for drawing people into the blues.

Teebeeferris ( Scotty), thank you for that wonderful picture of Stevie in 1978. It must be wonderful to have known Stevie and to have seen him playing in the small clubs around Austin. I hope you will tell us more about that if you can. I'll never forget the first time I saw Stevie. It was on a rebroadcast of the '89 ACL show about three years ago. Well, my world changed almost overnight. I was mesmerized, my socks knocked off!! I'd never seen or heard anyone like Stevie Ray Vaughan before. About a month or two later I was up in Canada in a hotel and the same ACL show came on..well I had the same reaction. As soon as I returned home to the states, I went out and bought two cds and went online to find more information about this incredible musician. For the next year I think I must have scoured every SRV site on the net, read every available SRV book and bought all commercial and several other dvds, tapes, cds.. It was this man who introduced me to the blues. I had never heard of many of the great blues masters with the exception of BB King. Through Stevie I learned about them, bought their cds, and went to their shows. The blues have opened up a part of me I didn't know existed..it's hard to explain but I know all here will understand.

I admire the man for his music and for his life example. I rarely spend a day without listening to his music. As much as I love many other blues musicians, Stevie is still #1 to me.

I saw him in concert in l'Olympia in Paris and it was the best ever blues concert I've seen, He is greatly missed by all blues lovers, listening to some of his songs makes you think that he was directly connected to heaven !

I feel that his excursions into instrumental jazzy tunes were a real breath of fresh air. I'm so fortunate to have seen him and Double Trouble w/ the Fabulous Thunderbirds about six months before he left us. He played everything so great and so effortlessly. RIP

Stevie could play anything and everything exceptionally well. He had no limitations. Given more time I imagine he would have wowed us in many genres of music, although always returning to his first love, the blues. We only heard the tip of the iceberg ( and just listen to that!!!!)...there could have been so much more incredible music.

I do hope that one of those you picked up is Live at El Macambo. The ACL is good, but it's a little "antiseptic" to me. At least compared to EM. Just MHO, of course!

No Sassie, it wasn't El Mocambo that time. I just looked in the bin for a pkg that contained 2 cds...but of course since that time I have purchased so many cds, dvd, tapes, and boots, including El Mocambo. I too am particularly fond of the live unedited shows where what happened it what you get. To me the proof of Stevie's greatness is in those live performances, although I believe his studio work often was done in a "live" fashion. This is the way to record IMHO. I wish everybody did it that way. It captures the energy of live performance. His prowess on the guitar is simply mind boggling to me.

His "UNPLUGGED" show on PBS was a classic. He gave short biographies of the different bluesmen that influenced him and showed the guitar styles up close. Man, what a treasure that program is.

Sonny Boy, did you mean the MTV "Unplugged" show or perhaps the VH1 Legends show? I have quite a few and don't recall the one of which you speak. PBS Unplugged?

Bluesyfem..........after I cleared a few brain cobwebs, I admit it was an MTV Unplugged. We really do need ladies like you on this forum to keep everyone on the straight? and narrow concerning our blues input.
I checked my VHS collection, to discover Unplugged between some PBS (Austin) shows so I just assumed.............and I'll watch it after the playoff game. Isn't it a classic treasure? I could watch it once a month.

Sonny Boy, it is but there are just so many SRV treasures out there. The first time I saw Stevie was on the '89 ACL show and that alone told me I had to see and hear more.

I've amassed quite a collection and have never been disappointed by any of his performances. There are of course some that really stand out, "Unplugged" being one of them. I love the "In Sessions" with SRV and Albert King. It was taped at CHCH studios in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada which is very near where I use to live.

Anyone have a favorite SRV show? ...or favorite SRV song? I know, it's hard to choose. I love "Mary Had a Little Lamb", "Leave My Girl Alone", "LIfe Without You",
"Done Lost Your Good Thing Now", "Drivin South", "Heartfixer"..and so many more.

Pesji, what was it like being in the audience THAT night?? I've never seen Stevie live, only on boots and commercial video releases. I've heard others tell of the incredible passion and intensity of his playing, just bring the house down every time. I'd have given a lot to have been in the audience at any of his incredible shows. Lucky you!!!

Sonny Boy, you've got me on this one. SRV w/ the Beach Boys?? "Beach Blanket Bingo"? I know Stevie made a cameo appearance in a movie called, "Back to the Beach" which if not for the few seconds of SRV would not have been worth seeing IMHO. I think Stevie had an offer to act in the future in a little more up in coming movie but sadly never got the chance. Rumor had it years ago that there would be a movie coming out about Stevie's life, but that never came to fruition either. Too bad, if it could be done well; thank goodness, if it would have been one of those half-truth sappy movies. Personally I don't think any movie could do this great musician justice. His music and his life are his monument anyway, no need for a remake.

Now Sonny Boy, what is that Beach Boys/SRV thing??

Some kind'a blues band up in Rock & Roll Heaven, no? But I'm in hurry to see them. Thank God we have them preserved on either vinyl, CD, or cassette. It was one of SRV's major influences Albert King who sung about "everyone wants to go to Heaven but no one wants to die!" I really miss SRV, Albert King and Albert Collins, God Rest Their Souls! In the mid 80's I went to the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach to see Albert Collins, took a few LP's for autographs as was my custom at the time, arrived 3 hours early for a good seat and wound up being escorted out the back door to Albert's tour bus, 1 knock and I was in, had my LP's signed and was on my way out when Albert invited me to stick around and have a drink. B-4 I could check the time almost 3 hours had passed, there was 1 more knock and Albert shook my hand and said "It's time to go to work". I stumbled back into the club, my friends did'nt know what had happened to me, but I did!. I had not only gotten skunk drunk but had one of the best blues experiences of my life! Lord I miss those days! Happy Birthday in Heaven SRV!

well birthdays over , here is a shot when stevie (double trouble ) played fri and sat night opening for big brothers band thunderbirds at Nicks Uptown , Dallas ,Tx 1982 , end of show they got together , never will forget it , jimmy played steel guitar that night tooo (great !!! )
