All- Billy and I are nailing down some details, here's the basics.
We've all struggled with what exactly to do for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. I think we all want to do something, but I for one feel that my efforts will be pretty small in the face of the magnitude of the relief event. So, Billy and I spent about 3 hours kicking ideas around here's what we're proposing.
We'll be organizing a benefit here in Aberdeen in the very near future instead of a BBF meet up. We're looking for all manner of volunteers to help stage the event. Out hold up is getting a date from the venue. We're thinking that we'll raise something in the neighborhood of 1-2000 pounds- several bands and solo artists and one very great night of music.
Here's the proposal. Many of you have bands or connections to bands. Join us for the BBF Global Blues for Katrina. Take a normal gig and turn it into a benefit, pass the hat, charge at the door- it doesn't matter. We'll donate our totals to the Red Cross for Katrina Relief in the name of the forum and post our totals here.
The cool thing is that we're global. So, we're wanting to try and coordinate the day so that we're a rolling, global benefit that hands the baton off to different time zones around the planet.
Why this way? Well, our little benefit is insignificant by itself, but it we all do something small it becomes something large. Second, if we all pull together and do some networking this can get huge really fast. For example, I've got several friends that are organizing small benefits in Alaska as part of this (and they were struggling with the same issues we were, now were all pulling in the same direction).
The forum is a great collection of unique and wonderful souls that love blues, and there's no other place on the web like it. Together we are mighty.
I apologize for not having a firm date for you yet, but really the date isn't that important. We'll have more organizational information coming, plus primers on how to generate publicity etc. Like Billy said we're going to use this area of the forum as our place to organize all the information. There's plenty of room for everyone that wants to help.
