G'day all,
I just picked up the dvd called Antone's Home of The Blues.
It is a fascinating insight into this legendary Club.
I thought this might be a good topic question if it hasn't been covered already ?
Where do you all think is or was the most important Blues Club of all time ?
Regards Ron Downunder
Here's a review of the dvd.......
Well I've had a chance to watch this dvd now and can give my thoughts on it.
It gives a great insight into what could have been called the greatest Blues Club in the world. All thanks to Clifford Antone of course. It was fascinating to see first hand his love for the blues and how he has spent his life making a concerted effort to get blues legends to play together and be paid the dues they derved and more.I didn't realise he was so dedicated to this cause before seeing the dvd.
Even to the point of getting much needed glasses for Hubert Sumlin and having Eddie Taylor's eyes fixed.
You can see how much it all means to him when he has a 91 year old Pinetop Perkins playing piano for him and Clifford is crying like a baby.
There are numerous snippets of live video of a heap of artists including Stevie Ray Vaughan !
One where he's wearing the blue Charley's Guitar Workshop shirt and a green beret and another even earlier video of him playing in that same shirt he has on in the Texas Tornado Jam gig. Also many many photos of SRV including some woth Albert King. Also some rare footage of the legendary Doug Sahm ! Jimmy Rodgers appears also.I didn't realise before this how influential he was.
Now don't get too excited just yet as all the video of any artists barely go for a few minutes each but I was amazed at how good the quality of it all was.The SRV footage is close to perfect and we can only hope that eventually full concert footage at Antone's will be released one day.
I'm sure a series of dvds with different artists at Antone's would sell very well.
What better way could there be to get this devoted blues disciple back on track financially and spread his blues gospel at the same time ?
The whole dvd is basically one interview after another with short performances from around 20 different artists.
I'd highly recommend this dvd for any blues and especially Texas blues enthusiasts.
It certainly whets the appetite for more expanded dvds.
I can't understand why this is still not available in the USA.
Anyway we're lucky here downunder for a change !
I bought my copy from DVDSTATION for $23 AUD postage included.
Some of the artists on it are ..
Buddy Guy
Muddy Waters
Albert King
B.B.King
Billy Gibbons
Eddie Taylor
Jimmy Rodgers
Jimmy Vaughan and the T Birds
Doyle Bramhall
Joe Ely
Sue Foley
Lou Ann Barton
Angela Stehli
Pinetop Perkins
Hubert Sumlin
Doug Sahm
Wiille Nelson
