I heard a brief bit on the radio yesterday about British fans being really upset that Manchester United is being purchased by an American businessman (his name escapes me) who currently owns the American football team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Is the uproar over the fact that an American football owner isn't going to really be that saavy with a British football team, or that his American football team doesn't have a consistent track record of success?

I think it's the amount of debt he's bringing in that has people worried but I'm no football fan, Taff or BBB may be able to shed some light on the subject.

Does this mean he'll cart it off to America, so we'll no longer have to put up with people droning on endlessly about bloody Man United?

If so, perhaps the guy might like to buy the rest of our clubs, too, so the UK can become a glorious, football-free zone! Oh happy day!

coming from up north, we have had a lot of coverage on this. there have been huge demonstrations, the burning of effigies of malcolm glazer. it doesnt help when he wants to rename old trafford. the nike stadium, i dont like manchester united, but that makes my stomach churn. why he wants to buy man utd is beyond me, he is not a football fan, maybe its the name and he can see a huge profit, replica kits etc, as a global brand. i just wonder if he will have the guts to turn up for a home match, i hope not as i would feel very concerned about his safety.

What gets me is if with the fans is if they were all so UPSET about the takeover why did they deconsecrate rugby's hallowed ground with their presence the other Sat??

Also wasn't Sir Alex complaining about the number of matches during a Premier League season.

In that case how suitable he lose in penalties - at least it saves another FIXTURE.

This guy is bad news, believe me.........he's the one that owns Blockbuster Entertainment, or did, anyway. He also owned the Florida Marlins, won a World Series with them, then sent all his good (read: high-priced) players away, effectively ruining the team. I'd be mad, too, if I were you.

Manchester United fans aim to boycott sponsors

MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester United fans have already burned effigies of the club's new owner, American Malcolm Glazer.

Now they're planning to vent their anger by boycotting the club's sponsors.

"We are hoping to put a stranglehold on Glazer's income stream and pressure the sponsors," Oliver Houston, vice chairman of Shareholders United, said.

About 3,000 fans are expected to take part in an anti-Glazer protest Monday, an indoor rally organized by a coalition called the "Reclaim United Campaign."

The targets are United's main sponsors: Nike, Vodafone, Budweiser, Pepsi, Audi and Fuji.

"We are not telling supporters to make the ultimate sacrifice and stop going to games," Houston said. "But we are asking them not to buy any merchandise; don't buy any pints of Budweiser, any glasses of Pepsi, any videos, any programs."

Glazer, the owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has acquired a 76.2 percent stake in Manchester United as part of a $1.47 billion takeover of the club. He is offering to buy out the remaining shareholders.

Glazer told the London Stock Exchange this week he hoped to take the club's shares off the market on June 22 "or as soon thereafter as is practicable."

About 65,000 individual shareholders hold 15 percent of the club's outstanding shares. About 35,000 are members of Shareholders United.

Shareholders United is urging members to sell all but one of their shares to Glazer. It is also encouraging them to deposit the payout in a newly established fund, called the Phoenix Fund.

Houston said the fund would be used to buy back into the club if Glazer's highly leveraged takeover fails.

"We are trying to tell fans what they can do, because they feel powerless," Houston said. "We want to remain defiant, put

All sports eventually turn into corporate machines. They have to in order to pay for all the bloated egos and bloated pocket books. Unfortunately, it's all about the money. How about the Walmart United?

Remember when your teacher used to tell you all that crapola about it not being about whether you won or lost but rather, how you played the game? Yeah, tell that to the guys before a Super Bowl game.

I'm with em all the way on that one! even though I don't like football.....I always wear walking boots, don't have a mobile/cell phone, don't drive, don't drink beer of fizzy pop. and have no plans to climb mount Fuji
