It's an exclamation, like yelling "shit" or "damn!" It's use is probably closer to "damn" or "God damn," actually. It may have gotten its start as a replacement for the blasphemous "God damn."

It's just a polite way of saying damn or damn it.

"Doggone it, I stubbed my toe".

So, if you don't like to curse say dang, doggone, etc.

Yes, it's still in use today. It's not all that widespread (at least not here inColorado), but you still hear it on occasion.

HaHaHa! Well guys, I'm from Mississippi originally & I can say unequivocally that "doggone it" is still in use today! At least for us southerner's it is! LOL!

Yeah, I figured it was more of a Southern thing than a Western thing. It seems to sound a little better with a southern twang on it. LOL

cuss = curse
holy gee = holy Jesus

Good Golly = for Good God
crikey = Christ
rubbish = for sh*t

I heard it a lot in NC growing up. It is less common since a lot of people started moving here from NY and Cal. When I was little Doggone it (sounds like dawg-on-it) was a way to politely curse in social situations and around women. Now with the recent influx of out-of-staters that whole notion has gone out the window. Most people (especially from NY) seem to think it is fine to just sling verbal garbage any time. I worked in an Electronics/music store for four years and could usually tell where people were from by how much they cussed in public.
