I never thought to count how many lps I had or anything but the numbers have sure grown thru the years. I was wondering how many lps cds whatever your pleassure you own. Just wondering if anyone reaches a point where enough is enough? Every time I have said that I see an lp or 20 lps and have to listen to the artist. I set real strict boundries or what I will pay. Not much. But not how many. Just curious.

I know a fellow whose record collection actually damaged the foundation of his house. Fortunately, he was a professional engineer, and for his new house he designed the foundation to the specs of a U.S. Air Force heavy runway. He has had no problems since.

I have both "too many" and "not enough".

Last time I counted I had about 4,000 CDs plus a few LPs. That was a few years ago and I've kept buying more since, mostly CDs, but a few LPs too. I must have at least 8,000 CDs now, 2/3 or maybe even 3/4 of them blues, plus some soul, zydeco, gospel, jazz and some rock as well. Oh, and one symphony by Anton Dvorak as well as a 3 CDs set of Mozart's music.
Lately I've been telling myself I really don't need to buy any more music, but you know how it goes : you read about the new album by so & so, hear about this new artist, etc...

I feel better now someone commented on how much music I had at my house and I never took notice so I had to see if I was over the top or just like the rest of the blues and music lovers. So 1500 lps at the least is not over doing it then good.
I keep them clean neat organized and played with a vintage audio system.

I wouldn't talk in terms of numbers, but I'd say when you don't recognise them all, that's when you have too many. That and when you start buying the same albums a second time because you've forgotten about getting them first time round.

like many of us--reflections of "what you have"
is much more important than "how many you have."
at least to me.

when it comes down to it---it never is "how much".
it's------"what you got".

i can't count the number of times, over the years,
that i've gone to fellow music fiends houses--and looked
through their extensive music collections and thought
"what a load of crap !"

to each his own. if you dig the music in your library,
that's what counts.

your "nirvana collection" could be "jack shit" to others. :^)

Too Much Music?

We're having this very discussion over in the RAWK section under favorite Rock'n'Roll albums. At least on my part. there was just too much music going around back in the day, and that some good bands/artists/albums were going end up getting lost in the shuffle.

In my case, it was letting Free fall by the wayside while I was listening to a ton of other music. Only so much time in a day.

Sometimes that happens when I buy books. Publishers have these neat techniques for changing the cover on a book, and also changing the blurbs and sometimes even the title.

Makes one crazy!

I also have bought cds that are re-issues because the label changes the cover.

Well I just listened to two lps I bought a few days ago and for five bucks it was worth every penny times 10. So I will keep buying.

Mileage will always vary on how much is too much but in the case of a music addict like myself it's never enough.

You know you have too much music when...

...there is probably not enough free time left in your life to listen to everything in your collection again once.

...the number of albums you own by artist is more closely correlated with the number of albums released by artist, as opposed to who are your favorite artists.

I am afraid that I qualify for both of these, and I am still buying music.

I guess that it is at least a better madness than drugs and alcohol.

This is so true for me. I don't have near as many as you all but my taste has changed so much over the years I'd swap half what I have for others I don't.

Please forgive the drift, but a strong bit of advice for those of you with large collections - document it. In the event of a loss, your insurance might not believe you (and trust me, they aren't always your best friend, I'm discovering).

Video-cam is best, preferably with a date-stamp. Go slow, take your time, and store it in a "cloud" somewhere in the event of total loss.

Same thing if you own a Picasso

Never put off til tomorrow what you can do the day after.

I still buy at least one CD/week (many are used). It's so exciting to discover a new band and explore their catalogue plus I'm a sucker for reissues with improved sound and informative booklets. A ridiculous amount of joy in a small package!

One of the biggest fears I have about retiring is that I won't be able to buy a CD whenever I want. Right now, it is one of my few "vices," along with books. I don't smoke or gamble, don't live extravagantly (e.g. big house, fancy car), don't drink much -- but I love hearing new music, whether truly new or just new to me. At the rate it's going, though, I'll hit the diminished income level right about the time there are no more CDs or CD/record shops left (which seems to be coming on fast). I've been hitting the $5 CD bin at Wal-Mart and finding some classics, which just means that the record companies are dumping their inventories in preparation for the end of CDs.

I just don't know if I will make the transition to downloading single songs.
