Ever since the young singer hit the international soul scene, there have been arguments about her, the pros and cons, some saying she's the real thing, others thinking she's a fraud.
This is not a poll, neither do I want to open the door to an open war here.
I just thought that people should be able to decide for themselves.

So here's one way to do it : Joss Stone live in NYC

I take the risk to speak about things that I don't master well enough to be sure to be right about but I found that Joss Stone's vocals, in this video like on the ...

... 2 albums of her that I got, misses something essential : she doesn't "move" me (emotionally or physically speaking). When I try to find what lacks, the only thing I can identify is that she sings more like a pop vocalist, her voice never floating around the beat as I feel "genuine" blues/soul/jazz vocalists doin' it. I like the grain of her voice but it seems to me that she drags off the groove all the musicians behind her !

I only own her first CD I bought really cheap (like 2€ or so) just out of curiosity. I must confess I like the CD, but not to the point it would make it to the famous "desert island".

Hot band. I liked this live set better than any of her recordings I've heard, but I'll bet this band would sound even better with a different singer.

I'm not in any hurry to check out her music.

I'm thinking she needs a few more years to mature; with of lots cigarettes, Knob Creek and heartache. Then she may be onto something.

I have that first full-length CD around here somewhere. I would say overall, I like it OK. I do really like that one song that's build around that Soulful Strut sample. Come to think of it, that's one of my favorite uses of sampling period. But I guess that's more about liking the music, not necessarily the singer

her first CD is the only one that I like.
On that first CD she was only 16 and you can hear her getting inspired by the music and with good reason as she had some very experienced soul players to help her out. She also had the pick of some classic but lesser known soul songs. she has also chosen to 'update' her singing style to make it more appealing to modern tastes. She has stopped listening to the music and has become more detached from the players. Like a typical pop singer as Kinghendrix says.
The best singers work with musicians to create something great and Joss had it but has now lost it.
Hopefully she will take some of Shermans advise and get connected again.

I agree.

Ihave Joss Stone's first cd and I liked it a lot when I first had a listen. But as some of you have pointed out, the emotions come across as rather flat. But then again she was only 16.

OK, I gotta confess why I started this thread. When she first started to put out CDs and be on the air, on TV, etc, the French soul community reacted very negatively. But I found what was said was pretty much filled with reverse racism (you wouldn't believe the number of white European fans who just can't tolerate white singers of black music !). I saw pictures of her, and I thought : "Sure, she doesn't look anything like Aretha, Irma, Bettye or any of those great ladies of soul, but how does she sound ?"
But I wasn't gonna invest in a CD just in case she might be real bad. Until I found her first one in a sales bin at a record shop, so I bought it, and I thought it wasn't that bad at all. As a matter of fact, even though she didn't move me as Aretha and all of those great soul singers from yesteryears to today do, I kind of liked her voice and thought : "Alright, she's very young, let's give her time to mature, and maybe we'll end up with another great soul singer".
Then when I was emailed this link, I wondered how all you soul lovers of the BBF liked her... or not. I think I got my answer to this question.
