Joe says that if they had all of that digital technology back when they were recording 'Hotel California', that they'd still be working on it. Sara Evans chimes in that then it wouldn't have been as good as it was.

I remember session musicians who were great at not making mistakes, worked well with mics, engineers, and strangers, but they required an artist to come in with the "goods", since they were like a "backing track". I hated sitting in the engineer booth, while the pros wasted tape, while "saving tape".

Like Steely Dan? Just imagine if they had digital technology available to them back then. We might not've ever heard about them as they'd still be in the studio.

My band The Muddy Sons just recorded an album in an all-digital studio. 1/2 on ProTools, half on ADAT when the computer died that was hosting the protools.

Here was our complicated work flow - I'll try to stick with simple terms for the non-tech peeps.

1. Press record
2. Play music
3. Press stop

Sound familiar?

When it was time to mix we

1. Pressed play
2. adjusted sliders
3. pressed stop
4. repeat as necessary
*note the lack of step 5: press rewind and step 6: wait a long time.

Mastering
1. press play
2. turn a bunch of knobs
3. press stop
4. repeat as necessary

Digital doesn't make things complicated - PEOPLE make things complicated.

Anyone managed to watch it from outside the US? It was blocked so I hid my IP address only to discover they were wise to that and had it even more blocked...

No more like Bill Black's Combo. They didn't beat on garbage can lids, or sing like Jerry (not Lee) Lewis. There was no hourly rates, it was all on the studio's dime, and splicing tapes was for saving special takes, and it took time. Like Steely Dan though, they were always asking for something different, and their "guys and gals" had to provide it. They knew what I could do and kept me hanging around also, but I was free.

Bill Black Combo? Part of the original Southern Rockers. That's rock'n'roll royalty right there. Artists through the years have always been looking for that something extra special. I get that. I remember that razor blades had multiple uses in the studio.

One thing that the "old school" recordings have in common with today's biz is that the novelty single has them paying attention to music that would never sell as an album.
