... in this case the 'suggestion' is prostitution.

There are other reasons to 'walk the streets at night' ... besides prostitution.
In a more contemporary vein, Bobby Bland has a superb song in his catalog of hits called,
"Walkin' The Back Streets (and Cryin')" (also covered by Little Milton) which is a reference to one having a 'worried mind' and not being able to rest, and as a result, an attempt to 'walk off' one's problems in order to perhaps forget (bury in one's mind) the troubling issue at hand, or at least, 'hide' one's feelings' from friends/others by 'walking the streets' and not sitting at home in sadness and in tears, or crying over one's beer/drink at a juke joint/bar frequented by curious friends/others in the 'public view.'

In the song "DeKalb Blues," Leadbelly sings"
I feel like walkin' and I feel like lyin' down
I feel like walkin' and I feel like lyin' down
Ever since my good gal done left this town."

IMHO ... in this case, Leadbelly is saying that he's so troubled by the loss of his 'good gal' that he's totally torn between his choice of action(s) ... going to bed and trying to 'sleep off' his problem(s) (to bury or forget the troubling issue)... or going out and actively 'walking off' his problem(s) (and forgetting the troubling issue via activity to take one's mind off the troubling issue).

The contrast/dichotomy of feelings and solutions is a superb example of one being 'torn' between two feelings/choices... being heartsick, one simultaneously having the feeling that one needs to lie down and 'retire' from the world and the current troubling issue on one's mind, and at the same time feeling the need to be active/'walk off' the problem/issue to try forget (displace/bury the issue in one's mind)... 'walk the streets.'
IMHO ... this is an interesting and effective metaphor/simile for being so troubled that one does not know which way to turn for solace and a solution to the troubling issue on one's mind.
