I stumbled across this great interview with Lurrie Bell. Among other things, he discusses the gospel influences of his upcoming new album (due 4/17), and he has some very eloquent and touching things to say about his late father, Carey Bell. It's a great read.

Everybody looks good at the starting line. Get on your mark,get ready but you better keep this in mind. You can hit the ground running like you're shot from a gun but going the distance is the hard part son. Everybody looks good at the starting line.

Thanks for sharing. In the aftermath of my accident and surgeries in 97' I listened to lots of music in the wee hours to keep me going when the painkillers had worn off. Lurrie's Delmark records from that time held a special place of honor for me. I was fortunate enough to meet Lurrie a few years back, tell him the tale and have him sign Kiss Of Sweet Blues which he did so while smiling and thanking me for making his music part of my recovery.

Great story! I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of years back. I couldn't think of anything to say to him and blurted out, "You're the best.". He grinned real big, paused a moment and chuckled "Thank you!"

When he played at the Waterfront Blues Festival several years ago it was not even 2 months after he lost his wife and father in close proximity of each other. He was at the Music Millennium booth signing cds and, after signing mine, I told him an interesting tidbit about his father, Carey, when he played at the festival a couple of years prior. He appreciated hearing that.

His performance was a bittersweet for me. He was spectacular but he looked very haunted, like his mind was was somewhere else. But I imagine that being on the road helped his mourning a little bit. His wife saved him from drug abuse, and I'm so glad that he appears to be keeping straight.

A very special man indeed. Still plays Buddy Guys bar at lunchtime with a 'tips' jar in front on him. Not in the least bit pretentious - despite his talent and pedigree. I had the pleasure (honour) of 'sitting in' with him during a show and it was a very humbling experience ! I used to think I was a tasty player but hell, this mans massive hands on a 335 almost made me cry. His latest release 'The Devil Aint Got No Music', with production from Scholler, is a work of art. $8.99 ..... it's a no brainer, just buy it and listen to a whole different side to one of Chicago's best bluesmen.

I agree about Lurrie's new CD. I fthink it is a true gem.

I'm really loving Lurrie's new album, too. It took me a couple of listens to get over the culture shock of not hearing ripping through electric blues workouts, but it's a really rewarding listen.

Anyone who can run down a copy of the DVD "Mercurial Son" will be rewarded with a heartrending and fascinating look at Lurrie and his late wife Susan Greenberg, learn a lot about him and gain even more awe. I see there are a couple affordable copies on Amazon.

He's really pleased about getting the Living Blues award for Best Blues Artist.

Thanks for the heads up on that DVD! I had heard the movie mentioned before, but had never tried looking for it for sale. Consider it added to the Amazon wish list!
