Yesterday afternoon, following the reports on the death of Amy Winehouse at age 27, I did some browsing on the infamous "27 Club" of artists dying at this age.
Some versions of the list of "members" include of course Robert Johnson. So while reading here and there, I found a German Wikipedia article listing Robert and stating
Syphilis as the cause of his death:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klub_27#Weite..._Jahren_starben
This is also stated in the German Wiki article on Robert Johnson, claiming that the birth certificate revealed in 1998 that Robert died of Syphilis:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Johnso...es-Musiker)#Tod
The latest information that I have is that there was indeed some discussion whether RJ had contracted syphilis and whether this might have contributed to his death, including some scribbles / notes written on the back of the official certificate stating "no doctor" as cause of death. However, I always thought that this was even discussed and analyzed in court during the various disputed regarding inheritance/royalties and that this issue still remains unresolved.
The Engish Wiki world is fully in line with this, mentioning the unclear circumstances of his death, possible strychnine poisoning, etc., for example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/27_club#Music..._in_the_27_Club
Now - did I miss the latest developments somewhere? Or should I hint at the German Wiki "experts" (unfortunately, there are too few who know anything about Blues) that this entry might be incorrect?
