Duke created specific vehicles for his "stars". Some of my favorites are captured on the RCA box set "Never No Lament: The Blanton-Webster Band 1940-1942". One vehicle which featured the entire saxophone section was the rocking, infectious "Cotton Tail (aka C-Jam Blues)". My favorite selection and vehicle in this collection is Harry Carney's rendition of "Sophisticated Lady"- a gorgeous melody matched to an impeccable lyric sensibility. Carney's unique voice permeates this composition both in the studio as it did "live" for dancers , witness "Duke Ellington at Fargo, Live-1940 (Complete)".
What are your favorite Ellington "vehicles" and performances of those vehicles? Do you have a favorite Ellington star?
