Question related to theft/piracy of music... if I have a bunch of old CDs that I want to sell on Ebay, which I uploaded onto my computer when I bought them - should I dump them from my computer when I succeed in selling the CDs?

I'm not sure why you'd want to dump them?

I'm pretty sure I'm going to be doing smething similar soon, except I'll be lifting individual tracks from 'weak' CD's.

I think you have no ethical reason to dump them from your CD;

you had the right to put them on your PC for personal use;

now I think you want to sell the original CDs, right?

You are not selling copies, so no prblem;

Suppose you bought a training CD, finished the lessons and learned something, then if you sell the CD, would you be obligated to forget what you had learned?
I don't think you're obligated to make your PC forget the music CDs either.

I would not only keep the files, but also make two backups of each CD and scan the sleeves and notes... individual consumption of (love for, or interest in) music during our short lifespan has nothing to do with perennial "rights", wide range profit, or international marketing. The "rules" which they are supposed to (but never actually, unless forced to) respect do not apply to individual morality.

Maybe there'll come a time they'll charge or fine you for listening to music out of the neighbour's window, and possible descendants of Abraham Lincoln will demand money for naming him in history books, but it hasn't come yet!

I can't answer from a legal standpoint, but ethically I see no reason for you to dump them.

P.S. - Maybe post your list here - some of us might be interested in your castoffs!

no list I'm afraid - they are only hypothetical CDs (at the moment anyway!), I was just daydreaming at work about it - thanks for the interesting (and amusing) answers though!

Who hasn't recorded a record/CD on to a cassette tape/CD? Nobody cares unless you start selling that stuff in quantity. Like a booth out at the flea mart. Whatever somebody does for their private use....not going to be a problem.

I know... it wasn't a serious quandry, I was kind of wondering what the actual law would dictate - it occurred to me that there might be no differnce between selling the original CD, and selling the copied tracks/CD - ie you still get two people in possession of the music from the one original purchase, in fact a hundred people in line could feasibly 'sell on' the CD at a low price, all keeping the tracks! No 'moral' issue - I was going to just post in the Screamin' and Hollerin' thread but didn't want it to sound like a comment/reaction on anyone's ethics! ... of course I would DEFINITELY keep the tracks!!

As for the RIAA, they'll never take me alive /medieval.gif

Ethical and legal nonsense aside... this is interesting because I believe the best way to making old blues available a more achievable thing isn't to hide and protect it like it's your privates or something, but quite the opposite - i got into the blues when the internet was around to act as a guide and even still it was fairly difficult to explore and get into it because of lack of available material (comparitively). I followed through because I found it a rewarding challenge

But a lot of times the reason stated for people's lack of interest in old blues is that it's inaccessible - it also requires financial dedication - as most of you with a decent size collection would know (hell most of my collection is "pirated" and I've still spent nearly $500)

If people spread the enjoyment without fear of being persecuted (make no connection to the earlier genitals remark) then it works like advertising because it doesn't take a special kind of devotion to recognise that Tom Shaw is fukin awsome if only you could hear his recordings without paying close to a hundred dollars

There are people right here on BBF (Jeff Konkel, Sherman, Nighthawk, Rene and others spring to mind) that should probably earn a commission for selling us on this stuff!

One thing I sure don't want to know is how much I've spent on records, CDs etc through the years. Especially CDs, that I first resisted when they came out - CD players were awfully expensive then. Last time I counted was a few years ago, and I had about 4,000 of them. And I've been keeping buying more since, I just stopped counting, but my estimation is I must have around 6,000 now.

Not so sure that I'd agree that the music has been remotely 'inaccessible' during the internet age - at the very least you could, in this period, purchase virtually any extant recording listed in DGR from the Document catalogue.
When I started getting interested in this music, around 1995, I found the opposite problem from the one you describe, there was just so much out there - I didn't know where to begin. If the whole lot had been available to hear for free, as much of it is now with Spotify (for example) - I bet I wouldn't have listened as thoroughly as I was forced to by the gradual accrual of individual CDs over a long period. I agree there should be a cheap option, within reach of everyone - though it's not (ordinarily) necessary, or helpful to obtain 1,000 tracks all in one go...
If the CD goes out of print, rather than pay ludicrous sums for a used one from some marketplace mercenary, sure... copy it.

The thing is, the nature of enthusiasts of pre-war music, I bet there aren't many who don't much prefer the object itself, the disc, with the notes etc, over the raw audio files. They're collectors aren't they?

As I understand, you are correct. If you sell your CDs and don't erase copies that you made for yourself, you are technically breaking the law. As they say, however, a law that is never enforced is not really a law.
