Each year Santa delivers John Tefteller's wonderful blues calendar to me, with all those classic images and ads for the old Paramount and other labels from the 20s and 30s. With it comes a CD of vintage pre-war blues that Mr. Tefteller has collected or has borrowed from other collectors, and there's usually a few rarities on it.
This morning, I'm reading through the calendar and discover to my excitement that the "Pea Vine Blues" on this newest CD is a transfer from a newly-discovered 78 that is in near-new condition, rare for any Paramount. And the sound quality is light years beyond the beat-to-death other copy that has always previously served as the best-known transfer copy for reissue purposes. It's wonderful, and a must-have for serious Patton fans. The flip side "Tom Rushen Blues" is also included here, but that song has long existed in some excellent transfers.
"Pea Vine Blues" on Blues Image #9, with the transfer supervised by Yazoo's Richard Nevins. *sigh* It's a Christmas miracle!
Buy the calendar, too, it's a beauty. http://www.bluesimages.com/
