Exciting matchups in the first round makes it difficult to choose which game to watch. Just finished this afternoon had Chicago and Nashville in a 'barnburner.' The Hawks did have a 2 goal lead but Nashville turned it around to lead by one until the last seconds of the third period when Chicago, shorthanded, tied it up to send the game into OT.
A controversial hit by a Hawk player gave Nashville a 5 minute power play which extended into overtime for over 4 minutes. The same penalized player came back to score and give Chicago the overtime win.
At one point in the game, the Chicago goalie made a save and the puck disappeared. The referees searched the net and the goalie's hockey pants but couldn't find the puck. The refs then went to the phone and called HQ for instructions. Shortly after a Chicago player found the puck under the goalie's sweater.

Just starting, it's Ottawa facing elimination against Pittsburgh.

The last two Pens/Sens games aged me with those four overtime periods. Game six was awesome. I don't know if Pittsburgh has a third straight finals run in them this year, but they fought hard to come back and win in OT. I hate to ask for an opponent, but Boston would give the Pens home-ice.
I'm happy to see the Habs pushing Wash a bit.
So many great late games, seems like OT every night. I enjoy watching the West games because I don't see those teams that often. The Canucks and Coyotes are my favorite two from out there so far.

An entertaining first round ended with a great upset. I like the second round matchups in the east. Boston/Philly just sounds like fun. It'll be cool to have Montreal coming to town. I didn't necessarily want the Pens to get the hot goalie next, but I was happy to see the Caps choke, again. Beware the President's Cup.

Could be a great series Hawkeye.

Everybody looks good at the starting line. Get on your mark,get ready but you better keep this in mind. You can hit the ground running like you're shot from a gun but going the distance is the hard part son. Everybody looks good at the starting line.

With all due respect, R.R: the Habs winning was a big upset, but imho does not rank so high. Like in baseball with good pitching, and football with a good defense, it's a whole different game in the playoffs. The Caps were a free-wheeling let it all hang out offense, but they were stymied by a good defense and a goalie standing on his head. Where was the Russian? Folded like a cheap tent when he got more attention than usual. Good pitching will beat good hitting and good defense will beat a good offense every time. The high flying Oilers of Mark and Wayne being one of the few exceptions.

We'll see whether the Pens experience their usual game one swoon tonight against the Habs or if they can actually go up 1-0(I'll believe it when I see it). My daughter and her college friends are headin' down to hangout with a coupla thousand other folks on the lawn in front of the arena to watch the game on a big screen. Gee, I wonder if NBC will allow the outside viewings for their game Sunday? Last year they said it cut too deeply into their ratings and they pulled the plug here and in Detroit.

When Montreal went up 1-0 it felt like 'here we go again', but the Pittsburgh power play teams scored 4 goals and all is well, for now. The Habs will make the necessary adjustments and be ready for game two. It's funny, the last two years were about the anticipation of can the Pens get through to the Finals? Now, it's "Are we there yet"? The NHL playoffs are a long, draining process. The Team's number three center and standout defensive forward Jordan Staal was injured so we have to see how that affects things. He has the dreaded lower body injury which can be anything from a contusion to a bullet wound in the wonderful world of hockey injury reporting.

I agree Rusty, Jaroslav Halak stood on his head and Montreal played a solid defensive game. But there's more to the story.
After a lacklustre regular season, Montreal 'lost' their way into the playoffs by circumstance. Halak was to play back up to the supposed #1 goalie Carey Price, but both goalies struggled thru out the year. The Habs entered the playoffs seeded 8th up against #1 Washington. Everyone wrote them off. Mtl was down 3-1 in the series. Halak was pulled in game 3 and sat out game 4. What happened next was remarkable.
Mtl won the next 3 games including an incredible 53 saves made by Halak in game 6 for a total of 131 stops out of 134 shots by the Caps. In game 7 Wsh had 42 shots on net but Mtl blocked another 41(!) more shots while only managing 16 shots at the Caps goalie.

In game 1 Pittsburgh exploited Montreal's size disadvantage and pushed them around in the first period. Halak was pulled 5 minutes into the 3rd after allowing 5 goals in 20 shots. The Pens won 6-3 despite being outshot by the Habs 31 to 24.
Montreal can't beat Pittsburgh...right? They better not. I have my money on Pitts to win the east.

The Habs and Pens series is everything I coulda hoped for. Pittsburgh is now in the same situation, up 3-2, as the Caps were in the first round. We'll see if they can seal the deal.

San Jose has eliminated Detroit and awaits the winner of the Chicago Vancouver series for the western final. Vancouver, down 3-1, plays the Hawks this evening.
In the east, Phillie is down 3-1 to the Bruins as the Habs and Pens go at it tomorrow night.

It's hold your breath, cross your fingers and knock on would time here in Pittsburgh. This has been a great series since the 2nd period of game two when Montreal showed that they could get outshot and outplayed yet still take the lead. There's been a wonderful back and forth since. I could see either team coming out on top, but just feel that the defending champs have enough of an edge in talent and home-ice to win. We shall see. Talk about a tale of two series. Boston looked tough for three games then Philly got it going. Both could end tonight, but I wouldn't count out the Flyers at home.

Congrats to the Habs. They jumped out in front on an early power play and never looked back. I'll enjoy following them on in the playoffs. I was into that 70's team from when Kenny Dryden got called up at end the '71 season throughout the four straight cups. My Pens had a good run with 2 finals and one championship. They ran outta gas.
Flyers are up 2-0. A Philly/Montreal conference final would be cool.

I can't believe I'm rooting for the Flyers. The TD Garden is hosting playoff elimination games on consecutive nights(the Celtics closed out their series last night). I hope that the Broons make it a blood and guts fight to the finish tonight.

Only San Jose stands in the way of the Marian Hossa hat trick, yes that's three consecutive final appearances and three losses. After the Pens lost to Detroit two years ago he said he wanted a long term contract. Pittsburgh threw a ton of money and 8 years at him and he opted for much less and a one-year deal with the Red Wings so that he could win a Stanley Cup(his words, not mine). After losing to the Pens in the Finals he moved on to up and coming Chicago for his multi-year deal AND to win the Cup. Let's see how that works out.
That aside, San Jose/Chicago should be a lot of fun to watch.

My oh my, so let me get this straight. The Bruins go up three games to none then the Flyers tie the series forcing game 7. The Bruins go up 3-0 in the first period only to have Philly tie the game at 3-3. Now, the Flyers take a 4-3 lead in the waning minutes of the third period. Help me I've fallen into the twilight zone and I can't get up
