For vintage stuff there's Jr. Wells' Blues Hit Big Town and of course the early Little Walter stuff.

The Aces also did an album that came out on Vogue and one with guests on MCM/Storyville. JSP and later P-Vine also put out a bootleg live European performance by Louis called Wailin' The Blues with Freddie Robinson (one of the "LA musicians" on "Southern Man").

I always thought Robert Jr. Live In Japan with the Aces was WAY better than Steady Rollin' Man (which I love). It's been issued on CD in two volumes and as a really hard to find Complete set. It has a lot of Louis vocals and solos and far more energy and assurance than the Delmark album, which was by all accounts a pretty bumpy studio experience.

Among his '70s output, I've always especially loved Louis' playing behind Sunnyland Slim on his ABC BluesWay LP Plays The Ragtime Blues. It's not on CD but the LP is well worth hunting down. Louis also takes a nice solo behind Sunnyland on Sunny's vintage song Sad And Lonesome, which is on several compilations.

Louis played on so many sessions that I'm leaving out tons of them here, but this is a start. The Aces were also on a lot of '70s Black And Blue albums (Mickey Baker, Koko Taylor, Jimmy Rogers, Willie Mabon, etc.) and the Chess (Blues Avalanche) and Excello anthologies live from the '72 Montreux Festival. The Aces and a couple of other guests backed Muddy (and many others) at Montreux that year and Louis' playing behind Muddy was just perfect. Muddy must have been inspired; it's one of the few times I know of that he bothered to re-tune so he could play some tunes in Spanish and get real Old School, even for him. (It's sad in these times when guitarists have a rack of axes next to them and a guitar tech traveling with them that back in the day, even for someone of Muddy's stature the idea of carrying a second guitar around seemed like too much to ask. Johnny Littlejohn was another guy who would have played more slide but didn't like having to re-tune in mid-set.) Okay, I'm wandering off topic so will stop. But Louis was the first real blues mentor I ever had and probably the best and it's an extra special treat whenever he's deservedly remembered.

More nice early solos by Louis: Freddie Hall's "Can't This Be Mine" (on a Flyright LP, not sure about CD) and the Lazy Bill Lucas Chance single "She Got Me Walkin"/"I Had A Dream."
