Thanks to Rene posting a link to Arhoolie Records I picked up Rev Louis Overstreet: His guitar his sons and the congregation of St Lukes Powerhouse Church of God in Christ. It was a really moving CD. Full of powerful singing, some sermonizing, and hymns.

Great album!

When I bought the album, I made sure that I got the version with the extra tracks. And now they decided to add two extra tracks on top of that.

A lot of it rocks harder than the rock music of the day. Right around the same time, the Beatles were singing " I Wanna Hold Your Hand". Kind of tame in comparison.

From what I understand St Lukes Powerhouse COGIC is still going today. If I ever get to visit Arizona, I'm hoping I can attend a service.

I just bought it yesterday. Does anyone know if Overstreet ever had any records issued other than the Arhoolie? Are there any old out-of-print LP's or 45's by him?

And my copy of the Arhoolie CD arrived last week, and it's just incredible. A must-have for gospel fans...and just $5 at the Arhoolie sale.

It's interesting, when I listen to Overstreet I keep hearing these riffs that remind me of Rev. Utah Smith and Rev. Charlie Jackson. I know all three were from Louisiana and I think Jackson said that Smith was a big influence on him, tho I've never read anything about who taught Overstreet. I guess Strachwitz didn't think to ask him 48 years ago who his influences were, but I bet Smith's music made a BIG impression on Overstreet.
