A resounding "YAY" on this! It's an amazing set of music. Great packaging, stellar notes and production. Go ahead and take the plunge - no pun intended.

I have this set....bear in mind that it's more "folk music" than "blues music"; a lot of old country-style music on there. That's not a knock mind you, I like the set - but I wouldnt consider it "blues music" even by a liberal interpretation.

Really great set - right, it is more than just blues but sometimes these kinds of compilations are the best way of hearing 'new' stuff.

One small gripe - further to my thread about the design work of Susan Archie - again she has done a wonderful looking job on this BUT no full track listing other than the extensive details in the book, so you have to flick through to find what you want. Unless you keep the sticker on the shrink wrap...

I finally pulled the trigger and got myself a copy of it just a few days ago, really.
I've listened to all three CDs twice so far and though it really isn't a blues compilation per se, it has a good a sound, it has that pre-war feel, and though I haven't been through the book/liner notes yet ('xcept for a look at the pictures

), it's a beautiful packaging too !

Good point about the sticker with the track listing. I'm pretty particular about everything that comes with lavish box sets so I saved it and tucked it inside.

The pictures are stunning and the notes superb.

As has been mentioned, it's not really a blues compilation, but there are some great choices for Pre-war Blues on it. The set actually reminds me a little of Yazoo's The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of box, but with packaging as the top priority. Susan Archie did a wonderful job - even considering that cih pointed out the lack of a complete track list aside from the shrink-wrap stick-on.

a resounding thumbs up from me as well, it really is a set well worth adding to your collection, disc 2 been my particular favourite (man v nature) its also the blusiest disc of the three.

In regards to the packaging, I'd add that while the book is great, and fantastic pictures...the sleeves that hold the CD's seemed designed to (1) scratch up the disks, and (2) let the CD's fall out if you tip the book from upright.

I put mine in jewel cases, like I do with all such sets (which is an added expense)

I guess it's an issue where you can't please all the people... I love what Revenant did with the lavish packaging for Charley Patton's Screamin' And Hollerin' The Blues set, but the color print sucks and the 78-sized CD sleeves with those goofy rubber holders are a royal pain in the ass!

The essay by Tom Waits is great here too! What is special about this collection, in addition to the great music, packaging, photos and annotation, is that 30 of these recordings have never been reissued.
