I just bought a Elmore James CD.
On one of the tracks I hear what sounds like Eddie Taylor playing rhythm guitar, I would have thought unmistakably like him.
But the liner notes say: "Elmore James:vacal; prob. Willie Johnson: guitar; Eddie Taylor: bass guitar; Willie Dixon: bass;"
It is track 9, Cry For Me Baby, recorded In Chicago, 1957, released as Chief single 7006, Dec., 1957. It sounds a lot like Ricky Allen's Cut You Loose.
Anyway, I find it hard to believe that is not Eddie Taylor playing guitar. Some of the things he plays are very recognizably so Eddie Taylor, and this is one of them IMO.
Could the liner notes be wrong in this case? Would there have been a bass guitar AND a (acoutic upright) bass in the same session? Could Eddie have been playing way high up on a bass guitar so that is sounds like a regular guitar? Could anyone in the universe, including the cited Willie Johnson, sound sooooo much like Eddie Taylor?
I hope several of you all have this track or record so you can help me out here.
JeffCobb says he has this same CD.
Also, I used to have a 45 by Little Walter, "Mean Old Frisco", and again to me it sounds like Eddie Taylor on guitar. Does anybody know?
Yes, Eddie Taylor, a major pillar in Chicago blues or anybody's blues for that matter.
