Yeah your post is the longer clip just that
the one in Biog.s gives you a taste without the
added Russian.

Thanks for the clip. The language didn't bother me since I've been speaking fluent russian to my neighbors for years. You see, I studied 1st year russian in college.

The clip certainly brought back some great memories like the time Son and my uncle, John Hurt, played the Unicorn Coffee House here in Boston. The next day Dick brought him over to our house for dinner. That was one hypnotizing experience, I want to tell you. My father had me get that old man one of our folding chairs and boy did he play. Right in our very living room. He and John Hurt drank Old Grand Dad and played the entire afternoon.

Boy, I hope you appreciate just how fortunate you are. Son House playing in your living room! Unbelievable. Just watching videos of him play gives me goosebumps; the real thing, just a few feet away, and in my house, would probably make me faint. LOL

I can tell you first hand that when Son House was here in Boston he had to be watched like a hawk. Dick Waterman just wouldn't leave him unless there was a monitor to watch his every move. As soon as you turned your back, Son would be out the door and wandering in a strange neighborhood trying to find the nearest package store. That's why he had penchant for often getting lost sometime.

That clip is from a DVD called "Legends of Bottleneck Blues Guitar" on Rounder (minus the russian commentary, of course). Both Rounder and Yazoo offer a number of videos featuring Son House footage from the 60's.

Package store?

Packaged liquors. In some places there is separate licensing for "poured" liquors and "packaged" liquors. Some bars may have dual licensing so they can sell packaged liquors, but if you only got a packaged liquor license, then you can't serve drinks like a bar.

Hi. Well the term "package store" is a term that a lot folks use to mean liquor store.

When Son came around here nobody knew who he was anymore than they did Mississippi John Hurt. My family, at least, had no idea of his reputation, or how famous he'd later become. To be honest, I'm somewhat baffled myself as to how well known and popular he is today.

Thanks for the clarifications on "package store." I figured it had somethign to do with Son looking for alcohol, but I had never heard the phrase before.

So John, I take it that this was before Son's "re-discovery" period in the Sixties when be came back into demand?

Son House is a famous musician, he should be more famous IMO so people around the world will have the opportunity to decide wether to listen to his music or not, but he is quite famous when I think of that because his records keep sale even after dozens of years, thats something that only small percentage of the musicians achieve.

All the above written is in my opinion unless it is someone else's opinion, or a fact.

I was thumbing through the Lomax book last night and I briefly read part of an interview with Son House. Today's thread will get me to go back and read it fully, but it was when he was around 39 and still living down south. I thought it was interesting that he talked some about "being to old" to get around much.

When Son House visited our home he hadn't yet been re-discovered for one year. Along with Nick Perls and Phil Spiro, Dick Waterman found Son House living in Rochester, New York. That was a serious time in the Delta where they had initially searched. Do you remember Schwerner, Goodman, and Chaney? Those guys looked around Lake Commorant, Clarksdale, Memphis, and everywhere. How fortunate they didn't wind up dead. I'd seen Dick Waterman around when he was still a teen still going to Boston University and hanging out at the Golden Vanity Coffeehouse.

It was unreal. All those guys on that Harry Smith Anthology like my cousin Skip, and my uncle John were presumed dead. They'd all recorded back in the twenties. A lot of people hadn't heard of Son House, etc, but thanks to those musicologists our eyes were being opened. We started getting into those old time blues singers. The next thing you knew Denson and Fahey found my cousin Skip, Hoskins found my uncle John, Dick found Son, etc.

Thanks john4y. It must have been kind of exciting to put it mildly. Those guys were some killer players, I never understood the gap in recording.

Its kind of odd that I had never heard of Son House when I was growing up in Rochester. Different times though I supose. Was he playing music while he lived there, or did he start playing again after he was discovered?
