"Don't wait for your pie in the sky in the by-and-by... get it NOW, right here on earth, with ice cream on top!" I couldn't have said it better myself. He passed in Los Angeles the other day after a long career based in NYC and US religion (Black or White) will never be the same. His radio broadcasts were wonderful in their simplicity and duplicity... praise the Lord! Peter B.

My parents listened to him every Sunday morning throughout the 1960s, as his services were broadcast over WILD-Radio here in Boston. Ike had a small church over on Worcester Street, as well as one in New York City up near the George Washington Bridge. You know, near the Audubon Ballroom, where Malcolm X was killed. Any ailment or terminal sickness that you had, Rev. Ike could cure. That's how divine he claimed his powers to be, but I always thought it was a sham. People believed in him, though. They'd dish out their hard earned money in the thousands. The man wore suits and jewelry so expensive like you wouldn't believe. Yeah, I hope he's resting in peace - praise the Lord. I hadn't thought of him in years...but yes, he was quite a character. He was to the black community perhaps what Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker were to the white community. There's not much doubt that Rev. Ike got his own pie with ice cream on top!

One thing about Rev Ike that stood out was that he never tried to hide fact that it was all about money. I once heard him on a radio program with a fellow broadcast preacher, an older man. This man's command of the language defied the size of his vocabulary and his grammar was of the home-made kind, but he got his point across as they discussed the importance of wealth. "People sometimes ask me, 'Reverend, you can't speak proper English, so how can you be on the radio every day?' I tell them, 'You know, every night, when I step into my fine Rolls Royce and have my chauffeur take me to my fine mansion in the country, I would rather say to myself, I is rich than I am poor." http://stomp-off.blogspot.com
