Okay, here's the thing..........I am a delta blues diehard; I love the gritty, down-home sound the blues offers, and to be perfectly honest, have always thought of jazz as pretentious intellectual music. In my heart, I know this is wrong.....Please don't mistake my intentions; I respect jazz musicians, as its heart is anchored in improvisation, hence a jazz musician has to know their stuff, but what I've heard does absolutely nothing for me. Help me out here. For a beginner, what would somone recommend?

I'd recomend Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives and Sevens as well as Sydney Bechet. They were among the earliest Jazz masters and their improvisations lack the pretense of modern musicians. I enjoy swing guitarist Django Rheinhardt and his recordings with the Hot Club of France.
I'm also into the Soul/Jazz from the late 50's throughout the 60's. Folks like Wes Montgomery and Grant Green were great guitarists with quite a Blues base to their work. It's also kinda hard to beat Duke Ellington and Count Basie.
Gimme a day or so and I'll try and come up with some specific titles that are available by the various folks I've mentioned. There's a lot of great Jazz that swings and contains stellar muscianship that isnt overly self-indulgent.

The Harlem Hamfats are Delta Blues musicians doing some jazz. Maybe their sound can work for you.

Why not give Roland Kirk a try. The guy used to blow three saxes at once and included a sirene in his arsenal of instruments. He among other things used a cuckoo clock and a children's music box for accompaniment.

But primarly he was a great flute player, very influential. He even invented a new way to play the instrument some forty - fortyfive years ago. Ever heard of Ian Anderson, the flute player in rock group Jethro Tull? Well, he learned every note, every sound and every trick he did from Kirk. (And actually recorded at least one of his compositions, the blues Youd did it, you did it)

There is a lot of blues feeling in Kirks music. And a lot of good humour. Hound Dog Taylor used the words "Have some fun" as a motto for his own music. Well, that applies for Kirks music as well.

The first thing to do is figure out whether the barrier is between blues and jazz or between uptown and down home blues. If you dig T-Bone Walker, BB King, Big Joe Turner, Charles Brown, Ray Charles, and Dinah Washington, then you already have a footing in jazz. If so, in addition to the recs already made, you might check out Cannonball Adderley, Gene Ammons, Ike Quebec, Illinois Jacquet, Jimmy Forrest, Brother Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith, Stanley Turrentine, Groove Holmes. There is nothing pretentious about their music, and a lot of it is just straight blues from the heart. From there, it is another small step to all sorts of other directions in jazz.

On the other hand, if you are not into uptown blues yet, you might concentrate your attention there as a first step from the Delta toward jazz. Let Wynonie Harris shout some jazzy blues into your soul.

i am a blues freak and have had pretty good luck gettin friends into jazz. of course, every one is different and these were cats i knew. first off i would go see straight greasy good low down bar jazz with a friend and check some hitters. get a groove on. its like finding your favorite bar. gotta have a favorite drink and bar stool and bartender. its the same. you get varied after you start. i started with b3 trios. its the lowest down and closest to blues for my own personal ears. to me. then i found guitarist i dug then the cats they worked with and so forth. but ya gotta support the live form. gotta. of course the plus is getting next to hip jazz cats stickin to their guns and trying to make it and make the right way. i�d find a pal with patience and a serious knowledge of good solid jazz and that he or she know you really really well. in l.a. i went to see earl palmer every tuesday at chadney's without fail when i lived there. denny freeman and i moved out from austin together and flipped when we saw earl's name. he�s a prince. we were there front and center every tuesday. john heard would show up, all kinds of jazz heavies just to hang out. jazz like. ha. its an integral part of being comfortable with my music. i see faces and places and sink into the record. i hope you get to do the same. there is a lot of jazz out there. a lot. you just gotta check it out. i hope you dig it.

or esecially the things Jimmy Rushing did alone! (he was basie�s singer)

it would in my opinion depend on whether you were talking about vocal or instrumental jazz so many players dont even reconize that many classic jazz tunes have words and as a vocalist player ifind that folks outside the instrumentalist sphere are mofe in tune with thespoken word then with someone who simply plays well

Check out the swing era Big Band sounds of the 20's and if you want to get an insight into Jazz listen to Dixieland Jazz, Spike Jones Band, and Miles Davis's career from start to finish. Jazz, like Blues, has roots, history, boundries, and has been defined by remarkable musicians through time. I'm not a huge fan but was prompted to take up trumpet in high school band from listening to Bunny Berigan, Louis Armstrong, and Dixieland Jazz style brass players. My trumpet god was, and still is, Bunny Berigan:

"The accomplishments of seminal jazz trumpeter Bernard "Bunny" Berigan have secured his place in the annals of American musical history. In his short lifetime, Berigan performed on more than six hundred recordings and achieved national as well as international success. He served as a direct link between Louis Armstrong and those who developed from his roots - Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, Wynton Marsalis, and others. Berigan and his soaring trumpet catapulted the Benny Goodman band, along with the rest of the country, into the swing era and assured Goodman's coronation as the "King of Swing." Berigan's uninhibited jazz style inspired and dominated every group with which be played, including the bands of Hal Kemp, Paul Whiteman, and Tommy Dorsey. His great technical skills and instant reading ability made him a coveted studio player for such vocalists as Billie Holiday, Bing Crosby, Mildred Bailey, and Lee Wiley. During his remarkable career, Berigan not only played with the music industry's giants but became one as well."

OK, here's the thing, Matt. If you go clear back to Louis Armstrong and the early Dixieland influences, you may NEVER get to be a jazz lover. I don't know how old you are, but that probably has something to do with it. Go back to the early 50s and have a listen to Gerry Mulligan and his piano-less quartet. The one with Chet Baker and Chico Hamilton. Great, beautiful, instrumental, experimental jazz. Think you'd like the big band sound? Give Stan Kenton a listen - also Woody Herman's 2nd Herd, Count Basie, Duke Ellington.
The 50s and 60s were a GREAT time for jazz, and as someone mentioned, Wes Montgomery would be another place to begin. The west coast sound, with the likes of Shorty Rogers, Shelly Manne, Bob Cooper, Bud Shank, Barney Kessel, a bunch of musicians like that is a lot of fun and some beautiful jazz sounds. Try J.J. Johnson/Kai Winding - Trombones for Two. Can't beat it with a stick.
Any more suggestions and you'll be snowed under. Have fun with this, get an education, and learn to love jazz.
