I'm primarily a perennial flower gardener -- the whole front yard is flower beds. Already have had crocus, daffodils out now, with violets and creeping flox just starting to pop this morning. A lone tulip that came with the house is actually going to bloom this year after 14 years of just sending up leave! The peonies with the southern exposure are more than a foot high and making buds, and the new German iris under the kitchen window have sent up flower spikes. Other iris and day lilies have come up a good six inches so far, with hosta points peaking out of the mulch

Eventually the backyard will be almost all perennial beds, too -- right now I have it nearly ringed, having transplanted a host of hostas from the house front to the new fence line on the south side of the yard (and they love the new spot -- several inches in two days, as it gets good morning light and we had rain). The lillies of the valley and yellow trillium have poked through the leaf duff in the pet cemetery corner, while my one remaining lungwort in that area was displaying delicate pink blossoms over its spotted fuzzy leaves this morning.

We'll put in some tomatoes in the small raised bed just outside the front door, since it holds moisture well, but since we are gone for lengthy periods over the summer to our boat, anything "annual" that needs tending is out, whether it's petunias or peas. Our one rhubarb plant at the corner of the backyard prairie garden is coming up well, however.

I am considering putting in a special patch in the back for some blueberry bushes, as the conditions amidst our pine trees (acidic soil, etc.) seem good.
