The NHL playoffs begin tomorrow night. Hard to pick a favorite. As always, a hot goalie can take a team far. Canada's hopes lie with Vancouver and Calgary. Forget the Habs.

The first round matchup locally is a rivalry thing. Pittsburgh/Philadelphia in a playoff series gets the blood a boilin' at both ends of the state. Luckily, the Pens got home ice adavantage thanks to the Flyers choking in the 3rd period vs NYR on sunday. Philly hadda one goal lead going into the final period and only needed a single point(overtime loss) for home-ice. They gave up two unanswered goals and we get the first to games here. My son has tix for friday night's game which were pretty tuff to come by. Me, I'll be in front of my TV tomorrow and friday looking forward to some pretty intense action.

That Pens/Flyers series is going to be brutal.

If I had to pick a team to win it all, I would go with either San Jose or Detroit.
My gut tells me Detroit wins it all again.

Of course, my gut tells me a lot of things. Right now, it's saying "Feed Me !!!".

The Pens go up 2-0 after fighting back twice to tie the game before winning in OT. Philly looked much better this time out, but took two bad penalties in the OT to setup a 5 on 3 powerplay that produced the game winner. Fleury is looking pretty good in net, his toe-save when they were down 2-1 late in the third period was huge. Now, it's time for them to travel to the city of brothers on drugs where they need to split.

The Pens got their split in Philly. They got caught up playing the Flyers game on Sunday and Fleury wasn't quite himself in goal so they came up short. Last night they still had too many penalties but the 'flower' shown brightly. The Flyers blowing home ice in the final period of the last game looms very large at this point.

The first round in the West is over and the big surprise was 8th seeded Anaheim handily beating #1 San Jose.
Tonight has two entertaining series finals in the East. New Jersey and Carolina, the Rangers and the Caps. Alexander Ovechkin is one of the most exciting players to come along in years.

I can't believe Brodeur gave up those two late goals in the third period of game 7 at home. That loss must have been devestating to NJ fans and players. As tough as Philly choking against Pittsburgh, blowing a three goal lead in the second period on Saturday was, this was worse because the Devils had the lead with just minutes left and a legendary goalie got beat.

The Caps/Pens series will be the marquee matchup featuring three of the sport's top players, but I'm not sure that it will be the best one. I'll give the 'burgh a slight edge because of the way Marc Andre Fleury has been playing in goal, but I'm not overly certain that they can pull this one out. Ovechkin is a force of nature and that home ice advantage might just be enough to tip the scales in Washington's favor. These teams have met in the playoffs several times over the years and I know from personal experience that it's gonna get a little testy. Wash may have a little more firepower, but the toughest team will win and, we're about to find out who that is.

I watched the 1st game of the Pens/Caps series Today.
I don't think the Pens will walk all over the Caps like they did Philly.

I like Ovechkin.

Personally I didn't think the Pens walked over the Flyers. They were the better team, but didn't play much better than Philly overall.
Ovechkin is an interesting cat and he's becoming the media darling. I have some concern for his reckless nature though. Having lost a brother in an accident at a young age made him a live for today guy, which contibutes to his charm, but puts him at some risk with his antics such as driving at high speeds through DC. His proclivity to living on the edge may shorten a very promising career. I'll enjoy him while he lasts.

I thought Pittsburgh started very strong in game one vs Wash. then shot themselves in the foot with two stupid penalties that lead to a 5 on 3 that tied the game. Their goalie's save on Crosby was huge. It reminded me of Fleury's kick save against Carter in game one of the Philly series. If the Pens don't play their game better than they did yesterday in game 2 they are gonna come home down 2-0. I gave Pitts a slight advantage because of the goaltending coming in and Fleury kept them in the game, but they'll be dead in the water if they continue to cough up the puck like they did in the 2nd period.

Another good game tonight.
First, Ovechkin gets a hat trick then, Crosby gets one.
The Washington Goalie (Varlamov?) continues to make some great saves.

The Pens have been out played in the first two games. I never felt that their leads would hold up. The Caps goalie has the hot hand and that was the area were I thought Pittsburgh had the advantage going in. They are commiting far too many turnovers and, frankly, look flustered. I'm interested in seeing if home ice helps them or whether the Caps keep rolling. My son and his girlfriend will be there and she's been good luck so far this season. Her last game was the OT win vs Philly in the first round. They need more than that to notch a victory though. Malkin has experienced his annual playoff swoon in this round which has shown up in the powerplay. Ovechkin has the better supporting cast behind him at this point and if the Pens don't wake up soon their season will end now.

and yet another great game tonight.
With the Pens holding that puck in the Cap's zone consistently during the OT,
I knew it was only a matter of time before they "slopped" one into the net.

Someone on the Cap's need to give Ovechkin some help offensively.

Malkin stepped up as the Pens win in overtime. Fleury always scares us when he goes after the puck and that first Wash goal tonight was a great example of that.

Gotta give the Penguins credit. They played great tonight.
A very well-deserved win.
This was the turning point of this series.
They'll go on to take this series against the Caps and play in the Eastern Finals.

They say a playoff series doesn't start 'til someone wins a road game. In that case, The Pens/Caps have played a four game prelude that has been all about home ice. I thought Washington looked awesome at home, but not quite so much here in Pittsburgh. It'll be interesting to see what affect the short turnaround has. Playing again tomorrow is probably the best thing that can happen to the Caps at this point. I expect to see Ovechkin flourish on home-ice after being pretty much held in check here. His best shot tonight was the one he put on Pens defenseman Sergei Gonchar's knee.

From what I saw of the first round series with NY I have to think that the Caps are more than capable of playing a great home game tomorrow, as if the past two didn't happen. If they don't play with more desperation than they did tonight they will be in deep trouble. I do expect, however, to see the series come back to Pittsburgh for game six with the Pen's backs against the wall.

Washington's goalie has played well but has let in some soft goals. Maybe too many. OV could be suspended for the knee on knee. The NHL will make their decision before the Caps next game.
I like the way Carolina is playing. They don't go into a defensive shell to protect a third period lead. They keep up the offense. Bye, bye Boston?

Wow, Pens in OT. They finally showed me something after 10 playoff games. This is the point where I feel like they are capable of actually doing something. This was like a heavyweight fight, haymakers everywhere and multiple knockdowns. Malkin got a lot of help from the Caps defenseman on that last goal, but he drove the puck very hard to the net and was rewarded for his effort. Ovechkin impressed me even more tonight than in the first two games. He did everything humanly possible. I'm glad that game six is in Pittsburgh, they need all the help they can get to keep this from going back to Washington. Now I'm having fun.
