The Dexter Gordon Complete Prestige Sessions box set is at the top of my list, thanks to this thread

What others would y'all shout out about? (And let's exclude the fantastic Mosaic box sets, which are limited editions by definition...I'm interested in non-limited editions that are or will be OOP)

The Complete Thelonious Monk Riversides

John Coltrane Atlantics

Sonny Rollins Prestige

Miles Davis/Gil Evans Sony box.

I've got the Dexter Gordon Prestige set but too much of it is live blowing sessions with pick up groups. By and large therefore not the best of Dexter whereas the box sets above absolutely show the performers at the peak of their powers (IMO) with very little, if anything, sub standard.

Correct. It's the reason why I didn't pick up the Dexter Gordon box. I had all his Prestige LPs back in my vinyl days and didn't like 'em very much. They're OK if you're into that sort of thing (blowing sessions with pick-up groups), but I prefer his excellent 1961-1965 Blue Notes.

I can't speak to it, but one website was recently selling the Art Pepper Village Vanguard box sets for dirt cheap. Are these going OOP?

That was my understanding of it Hans. I love Bird but I think Sherman loves him more because I would never plunk down bucks for such a set but once again to each their own. It might not be a bad investment for a serious student of the alto sax.

I recently viewed a thread that the Stan Getz Roost Recordings were going OOP. I can't speak to these recordings since I don't already own them although they are highly regarded by many.

Wonderful music and a great set. I have the earlier, long OOP Mosaic set, which has most of this material, but this one is a good alternative. Anyone interested is advised to get this set asap, because it is indeed going OOP.

I got this set a couple of years ago and have probably listened to it, especially the Jimmy Raney tracks, more times than any other set over that period of time.

Well, that same picture illustrated the sale, and the seller has a 4.9 out of 5 average positive feedback for 2,000+ sales, so I'm confident.

I may not have worded my original post very well. In fact, my fear is that most major label box sets of jazz sell such small numbers that they are endangered species, especially given the state of the compact disc physical media business these days. My fear may be unfounded, yet the speed with which the Miles Davis and Billie Holiday boxes were sent to OOP status startles me still.

Don't forget Charlie Christian's Genius of the Electric Guitar and Louis Armstrong's Complete Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings boxed sets, which also went OOP very quickly and suddenly.

You're right. Maybe this thread should include all must-have jazz boxed sets, including those still in-print

As for the Armstrong set, there's a better-sounding alternative, the JSP Hot Fives and Sevens 4CD-set, which was mastered by the late John R.T. Davies.
