Some years back I saw him perform as part of the Newport Jazz Anniversary Tour. Quite good as a matter of fact. I have some James Carter from an album called "Tough Young Tenors' which also feature Herb Harris, Walter Blanding, Jr. Tim Warfield, Jr and Todd Williams. To be honest Carter and Blanding are the only names that I'm familiar with. Any thoughts on his releases?

I like his new release (Present Tense); also Live at Baker's Keyboard Lounge, Chasin' the Gypsy (a Django tribute), and Layin' in the Cut (electric jazz).

Those are his four releases that I think are his best.

I also recommend Ronald Shannon Jackson, What Spirit Say, an exciting recording on DIW which features James Carter.

I agree with you completely on those four. I have a particular fondness for Layin' in the Cut. On that one, Carter puts his tendency for going a bit over the top to very good use.

Chasin' The Gypsy is the one I like best.

I saw Carter play live in 1996, and it was just fantastic. I have seen him live other times, and he was not as good. Many of his albums don't seem to capture all that he is capable of. He is like a baseball superstar who always puts up .280, 25 HRs, 90 RBIs, when with his talent you would think he would be in the Willie Mays category.
