These were originally LPs on the French MCM label, and any good music is by accident. As I've pointed out before and Delta Roots does in this thread, the marketing concept is basically a fraud. These recordings were made in clubs, but they weren't "live" because not only was there no audience (they were cut during the day time and the public was not invited), but in all the cases I know of except the Bobby King one which was done first, the vocals weren't even amplified so the band couldn't really hear them. Add some pretty ugly covers and it's no surprise that many of the artists were embarrassed by them when they first appeared. They did serve a useful purpose because at the time, a lot of the city's blues stalwarts were woefully under-recorded and overdue to have a representation of what they sounded like available. But they weren't really conducive to bringing out either live energy or the best in the artists. There was also Marcelle Morgantini's agenda of having as many artists as possible do "Rock Me Baby" and her refusal to record Eddie Taylor with his band because it had a white face or two in it. That's beautiful that Nick likes them; too bad the circumstances didn't generate something he and the artists who did the albums could have loved even more.

DR, the session Bobby King didn't make due to his stroke was the Aces session; he did his own session at Queen Bee (the only one done there) earlier. Marcelle's son is Luc; Didier Tricard was also along, and Jimmy Dawkins was her main Chicago assistant. Marcelle died a few years ago after being in bad health for awhile.
