I saw the film when it made its limited run in Portland. I liked the way it ran through blues history chronologically somewhat. A number of fine performances. But that Chuck D segment was a total lambasting of John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom." I'm all for moving forward in musical styles to keep interest intact with younger audiences, but I would've preferred seeing somebody who plays blues regularly than this rapper. Why not Chris Thomas King or the North Mississippi All-Stars for example? I am also aware that politics and economics have played a role in the history of the music, but Chuck D made a political statement with his treatment of the song, which should've been a tribute to a great like JLH. The show was meant to be a celebration. I also have a bone of contention when an artist such as Robert Lockwood Jr, a living personification of the genre itself, is present at this event and the film-makers decide to include Chuck D or Macy Gray in the movie instead. If you missed it in the theaters near you when it made its run, have no fear, as is the case with many films aimed at the blues audience it'll most likely be in the DVD section of your local music store or Wal-Mart within the next few months.
