Deepest Blue Posts: 6152 Nov 20 08 12:47 AM	Tags : None Anyone else dig this guy? The Lou Donaldson album "Here 'Tis" arrived in the mail today and I'm listening to it right now. Have to say, Baby Face Wilette is just amazing here. This is my first exposure to his playing on organ. He has a great groove going. Anyone here also a fan and wish to recommend an album or two? Please add some thoughts.

Deepest Blue Posts: 5139 Nov 20 08 3:43 AM	Baby Face Willette was incredible, one of the greatest jazz organists (IMO) with a very original, compelling and energetic style steeped in the blues. Virtually everything that he recorded is worthwhile, and that isn't nearly enough. "Here Tis" is fantastic indeed, as are both of Baby Face's albums as a leader for Blue Note. Then there is Grant Green's debut album: "Grant's First Stand." His later two albums as a leader for Argo were released recently on a single CD. They are not quite up to the level of his Blue Note work, but I still wouldn't be without them. It is really a crime that Baby Face wasn't given more opportunities to record - a true jazz legend, if you ask me. Muddy

Deepest Blue Posts: 3244 Nov 20 08 4:02 AM	Other have hit the highlights: his own four LPs and the Donaldson and Grant Green LPs. Baby Face played with a lot of the Chicago blues guys in the '50s and did a couple of blues 45s himself before the LPs. Chicago singer-keyboard player-drummer Bobby Davis is his cousin. Baby Face was killed in Stateville Prison in the early '60s. There was a good thread about him recently on Organissimo.com. Chicagoland

Deepest Blue Posts: 153 Nov 20 08 8:07 PM	Baby Face Willette's work with Fred Jackson might lead you to Fred Jackson's "Hootin' & Tootin' " on Blue Note. Although Baby Face doesn't appear on it it's still a hidden gem. I always wondered why it took so long to get "Here Tis" reissued on CD since it was a great LP. Of course the reason was I hadn't bought the LP yet. Right after I found a LP copy the CD was released. And of course I had to buy that too. The record companies seem to know me all too well.

Deepest Blue Posts: 3408 Nov 20 08 9:46 PM	Baby Face Willette is the man, and that Face To Face is the top! And you get the guitar of Grant Green too which is always a good thing. Seems like he just got to release 4 records in his own name, 2 on Blue Note, and 2 on Argo. He is on this album too:
