For me, autumn is the season for ballads, especially those rendered by tenor players. My favorite moments of "tender madness" ballads include two by Sonny Rollins-"Skylark" and "God Bless The Child",
Dexter Gordon's live performance of "Body and Soul",
and the Ben Webster lp on Black Lion "Atmosphere for Lovers and Thieves"
John Coltrane's "Naima" and Wayne Shorter's "Nefertitti" seem to bring out the best in others.
I also highly recommend Sonny Rollins' new release , Road Shows, Volume 1 which includes a heartfelt rendering of "Ruby, My Dear" and "Some Enchanted Evening".
Your turn.
Peace,
Blue Trane
