I was just about to subscribe to a Blues mag and thought I'd hold off until I consulted the experts...what's your favorite magazine?????

if you see me comin', better step aside...

The only blues mag I subscribe to is Blues & Rhythm.

It suits me because my interest is in older more traditional types of blues rather than blues/rock or blues/soul and on that basis I thoroughly recommend it. Published without fail 10 times a year.

Good in depth articles by people who know their stuff and reliable, mostly interesting, reviewers. Reviews which describe each track bore me rigid. The B & R team try to provide context and an angle.

i tend to buy, blues matters, and occasionally, living blues and blues & rythm, magazines. which i swop for blues in britain. i think they are all good magazines, though i think, blues in britain, would be better going as a bi monthly, as they really seem to struggle, to fill up the magazine.

For reason of vanity I would like to get my hands on an early issue of Living Blues.
Unfortunately I don't know the exact issue number or date. It had a feature about Maxwell Street with a photo of Big Walter Horton playing outdoors on the sidewalk of Newberry (or maybe it was Peoria?) Street a block south of Maxwell.
I am in the picture, sitting on the porch of the building the musicians had their amps plugged into for electric power. I was wearing a suit coat over a sweater and had on a wool beret and wore eyeglasses. (In case anyone has the issue and recalls the Big Walter photo.)
I used to have a copy I bought it right on Maxwell Street at that time Living Blues was a new publication struggling for fame and fortune.
If anyone has this issue I would appreciate learning the issue number and/or publication date to help me track down and purchase a copy.

I always thought Living Blues lacked on informing you when your subscription was about to lapse. All I found was that it would stop arriving and I'd see new copies on the newsstands (which is becoming really hard to locate nowadays, too).

Soul Bag is a very nice magazine for many years but for my taste ABS magazine is the best, not that I read French that good but great articles with many photographs, discographies and label shots of unknown or lesser known artists!

Honestly I don't read any of them and haven't for over 30yrs. I just can't relate to their perspective of the music, and what is their fantasy as opposed to reality.

I do however have a courtesy subscription to Block which is written dutch so I can't read a word of it but I do like looking at the pictures and seeing what festivals are going on over there and who is performing.

I think one of the best ones I've seen lately that I can semi relate too is "Big City Blues" out of Detroit.

You know, that's always the first thing I do in any of the mags is look at the by-line of the photographers to see how many of my friends I can see. Any publication using Dusty and Val's shots are first-class . . . so now Dusty, you can send that check to me, too.

I only subscribe to Blues Revue http://www.bluesrevue.com/ as all the other ones seemed like I was reading a textbook. I've tried or looked at every Blues mag I could find and this is the only one I've stuck with, and that's probably around 10+ years now.

Just out of curiosity (and maybe to spark some real debate), could you elaborate?

I first subscribed to LB back in the late 70's, back when it was in B&W and run for the most part by Jim & Amy O'Neal. I learned a lot from that magazine - at the time it was a 'lonely voice in the wilderness' and basically ignored the (largely white) blues revival bands in favor of the originators who were still around. Wish I still had those old mags; I held on to them for quite a while, but moved one too many times I guess. I have resubscribed a few times over the years, but haven't read it for a while.

I read Blues Access from its very beginning until its demise. I still have some early Blues Revues from when it was a paper tabloid called Blues Revue Quarterly and it focused almost exclusively on acoustic Blues. I knew something was up way back when they first went glossy and had Johnny Winter on the cover.

I don't currently subscribe to any of them.
