Yes, it's that time again. Kick-off is this week. I'm looking forward to seeing who the surprise successes and dissapointments are. Of course, it's always tough to judge from the first few weeks(San Diego/Detroit in '07).
My personal pessimism concerning the stillers remains. I wanna see 'em do their thing when it matters to get a better feel for what is what, but lots of questions remain. That's why we watch.
How about your teams and the rest of the league, what do you think?

I'm still expecting the Raiders to turn things around this year.
Other than San Diego, there isn't much competition in the AFC West.

I think the Steelers will do well.

I predict that New England 's "Reign of Terror" is over.

Just about 9 hours 'til skins/g-men and I'm psyched.
stillers open w/Texans sunday and I'll learn something about pitts right away. As I've mentioned, over and over, they have had trouble beating teams they should be able to handle and Houston qualifies. This trend dates back to Super Bowl season of '05 and can be especially dangerous this year with the toughest schedule in the league. I'm not too concerned about the defense this week, but the work in progress o-line is very suspect and must step up against Mario Williams and a tough d-line.

The thought of keeping Heath Miller in to block is kinda scary. He's on the verge of becoming a premier pass catching TE and is one weapon they need early on to help the offense be as balanced as possible. Ben has a fair receiving corp and solid running backs, TE is a spot that can take pressure off of both. The Texans can steal this one with strong D and special teams. The stillers special teams have been erratic at best the past few seasons so that and the o-line are the potential weak links that can cause the chain to break. This defense is ok, but I don't think they are capable of carrying the other two phases on a regular basis. This is one of my most personally anticipated seasons because of the question marks. Yes, I'm ready for some football.

The other games I'm gonna pay the most attention are...
Wash/NYG - How do the champs get outta the gate? Where's Wash with their new west coast style O? Lots of stories about them still adjusting to their first year head coach's system.

NYJ/Mia - No really, I'm a Parcells guy and wanna see what effect, if any, his front office leadership brings at first(not much I'd think). The Bretts open on the road and have a chance to work out the kinks before takin' the show to Broadway. Favre and fellow newcomer Alan Faneca are the offensive captains, lets see how instant leadership works. Wouldn't it be great if Chad out duels Brett? Oh hell, I'm a Jets guy since Joe Willie, Go JETS, squish the fish

Cin/Balt - OK, they are in the stillers division and I feel contractually obligated to watch.

Jax/Tenn - I'm really interested in seeing how these teams break from the gate.

Dal/Cleve - This is the first day of the rest of the Browns life. Let's see what their D is made of. Tony Romo is fast becoming the A-Rod of football with his big stats, big contract and meager big game production.

TB/NO - Another emotional homecoming for the Saints.
Ariz/SF - I'm a coach Wiz fan and wanna see if they can do anything in a weak division.

Car/San D - Does Car have anything? Is Shawn Merriman(sp) out of his frickin' mind?

Minn/GB - This one is near the top of my list. Talk about high drama on a grand stage. Are the Pack a contender or a trainwreck? Is this the year Minn puts it together and reclaims the Div crown? These and other answers forthcoming.

Den/Oak - This one is on Monday Night Football so I'll watch.

Of course my SeaChicks have the distinct advantage of playing in the softest division in the NFL ---- NFC West.... They should repeat (despite any hopes you 49er fans may have

)...

After that it will be a crap shoot as usual....

The SeaChicks return all 11 defensive starters...

RB situation will be a revolving door - Maurice Morris - Jones - TJ Duckett....

Hasselbeck hasn't played much during preseason, but that seems to be the norm this year with NFL QBs...

Hey! Give us a break, will you? You forget that we have Mike Nolan as our head coach, and that's like giving our opposing teams a extra 12th man on the field. It is entirly feasible that Mike Martz will end being our head coach before this season is over with. If that happens, we might have a chance of a decent season.

We also have the world's mosrt expensive backup QB in Alex (Who Me?) Smith while our starting QB is working for the league minimum, and don't even get me started on the current ownrship.

As a 49 fan I expect to suffer again.........the owners are complete idiots. Where's Eddie D when we need him again.

BTW Joe's son Nick is a junior starting at Oaks Christian this year-I'll keep an eye on him for sure! Jimmy Clausen at Notre Dame played at OC.

I hope Washington does well-I loved watching Jim Zorn flee for his life back in the day in Seattle-good luck to him! Snyder is a complete nutjob as well!

I go all the way back to the Zorn/Largent days with the SeaChicks.... I was married at the time and we ran around with WR Sam McCullum and his wife a bit.

McCullum had some interesting "inside scoops" on the Hawks.... Said that Zorn was the best all around "jock" on the team (all sports), but was a bit of an "air-head"...... Sam's first years in NFL were with the Vikings (Tarkington at QB) and I once asked him the difference between Zorn & Tarkington.... He said the first time he went on the field as a "rook" into the Vikings huddle he was chattering away ("come on guys let's go", etc., etc") and he said the huddle was dead silence....Tarkington walked up to him and said: "Shut the f**k up, when you are on this field I'm the only one who talks!" (also said that all-pro offensive lineman Ron Yary was scared to death of Tarkington).... Then Sam said the first time he went into a Seahawks huddle Zorn said: "Gee guys, do you think this will work?"...

Eddie D was great. I was always jealous that he took care of the 49ers instead of the Penguins, we woulda won a few more Stanley Cups.
Let us know how it goes with Joe's son. We hated Joe in High School, he always kicked our behinds. He was varsity when I was 8th and 9th grade so I never played against him. Thing was, he was such a scrawny guy back then nobody could understand how Notre Dame wanted him. He was such an ungodly competitor though, that was always the difference between him and everybody else.

I was a Marino guy myself, he's the typical western Pa jock. I grew up with and knew a ton of guys like him personality-wise. Noone had that arm though, ever. Between high school, college and the pros I saw him make throws that not even Bradshaw or Namath could make. And he released the ball so quickly, it was impossible to get near him. If that guy's knees had held up, wow, I shutter to think. He had a nice set of wheels in baseball until the first knee injury in high school.

My biggest fear is that the stillers end up with an idiot like Snyder as the next owner. I really can't see how the Rooneys can retain majority ownership at this point and I'm sure we'll get some mega rich, hands on dofuss. As much as I hate Dallas, Jerry Jones knows how to be a mega owner and win. Sure, he's a horse's arse, but he can make things work.
I sure do hope Romo blows up in his face though.

Nice start for the stillers. The Defense played about as well as expected. The offense got a big break when Gary Kubiak had the Texans go for it on 4th down at midfield and didn't make it. Personally, I thought Houston got two bad spots from the officials in a row, but I'll take it. The stillers rolled downhill from the 50 and scored on their first possesion. It was katy bar the door from there. Mario Williams was held to 3 big plays, one of which lead to a score, but Houston was down by that point. The special teams didn't hurt Pittsburgh and they did something very important, beat a team at home that they should have beaten.
Now, lets see what Cleveland does against Dallas.
How 'bout them Seahawks!

I'm happy with the way the Steelers looked today.
Tom Brady went down early, the wheels could be falling off of that wagon.

Unlike your Team, the Steelers already have a good RB in Willie Parker so, he got the start.
Mendenhall did play.
Comparing Forte to Mendenhall is not a fair comparison because Mendenhall isn't a starter, Willie Parker is.
Who by the way, ran for 138 yards and scored 3 TD's.

One prediction has already come to pass here: The Patriots season is done as Tom Brady will be nursing his knee.

The Bears surprised me and my default team since I was kid, The Giants did too.

I'm looking for it to be a very close year with the Colts and the Cowboys running neck and neck all year.

That Cowboy team is the early Super Bowl favorite for many, I wouldn't be too disheartened by that loss. We'll find out more about the Browns next week against the stillers. Pittsburgh looked ok yesterday, but a home win on opening day vs Houston aint that big a deal. We'll see what the stiller D is made of next week. I don't wanna see a shootout.

Not tonight though as Denver rolled the Raiders 41-14 and the Broncos were without their leading receiver Brandon Marshall.
