Posts: 233 Jul 16 08 1:12 PM	Tags : None Okay, jazz folks. What's the best way to purchase his early Victor recordings? I already have his Brunswick/Vocalion recordings through '31. And I have ordered OKEH ELLINGTON. I'm beginning at the beginning and the listening is very fine.

Deepest Blue Posts: 522 Jul 19 08 3:34 PM	The label is out of business now, but if you can find their CDs (they turn up on ebay from time to time), the French Masters of Jazz label series of Ellington CDs is a good way to collect early Ellington. Their transfers are first rate. With well done and informative notes as well.

Deepest Blue Posts: 5139 Jul 21 08 10:14 AM	Dave: There are very cheap European box sets out there that package up virtually all of the pre-LP age Ellington. You should be able to find something very reasonable. I have the complete 20s and 30s Ellington on the Chronological Classics series. That series differs from Masters of Jazz cited above primarily in the exclusion of alternate takes from the same sessions. For early Ellington, I would argue that the alternatives are pretty much overkilll at any rate. In fact, Ellington recorded a good portion of his best numbers for many different labels, and all of those "alternates" are on the Chronological Classics series, as well as newer box sets that are much better bargains. Deepest Blue Posts: 410 Jul 21 08 10:22 AM	About 5 years ago I bought a 40CD Ellington set which cost less than �50. Essentially it contained virtually all pre 1947 originally issued studio recordings and a few early post war live concerts. Sound is just this side of acceptable. Not state of the art by any means but OK. The label was History which is part of Membran who have (or had) other equally cheap jazz and blues boxes available. They regularly came up on e-bay but I'm not sure of their current availability. From the same source I bought 10CD sets by Fats Waller, Bird, and Billie Holiday together with other blues, jazz and boogie woogie sets. All for about �1 per CD. Being European these sets are quite legal under EEC law.
