Dear Blues People,
I am sorry for not introducing myself properly before now, but better late than never. I have been hanging around the forum for a while, but haven't really felt I had that much to contribute with. In addition to that, I registered with this stupid nickname that I've been using since my teens, and which is very un-bluesy, and I do not know how to change it! How stupid is that?!
Enough excuses, here is a little about myself:
I am a 34-year-old man from Denmark, who has been playing the blues for eighteen years, however I have not really been practicing very seriously all of the time. Apart from a brief spell when I was a teenager, I have not performed professionally until recently. I guess I have been a good boy and finished my studies and got a decent job (as a teacher and international coordinator in a vocational high school), a wife, and two daughters, and never really had the courage to be serious about my music. These days I'm growing more confident in my ability. I reckon it happened as soon as I realized that I did not have to be the best guitar player in the world. If I enjoy myself, it is okay. I think I suffered from the musician's equivalent of the writer's block. I was scared to play for anyone in case they would tell me I was not the next Robert Johnson.
What I'm trying to do is playing the blues in my native language, which very few Danes have done before. It is really difficult not to make the lyrics sound corny, because of the differences in the way English and Danish languages are constructed, and because of the differences in mentality. But I try to make the lyrics like poems and avoiding the cliches, and I think the lyrics are my strong point. I am probably more of a poet than a musician. I am also an academic. I guess that is why I write this embarrassingly long post. By the way, my dissertation was called "Right to sing the blues?"
I hope I haven't put people off with this long and tedious post. Anyway, here I am joining your wonderfully well-run forum,
Nicolai
