Not sure how to do that, though I have seen the cover. As a matter of fact, I know the guy playing guitar on Born In Newton County. He plays guitar on the link provided above. What do you think about his playing?

That's me playing guitar. I was just looking for unbiased opinions on the music. If there is I anything Cora Mae or myself can do for your radio show let me know.

I can provide you with more songs if you desire. We have two CDs out with MM and three more on the way. None of the songs uploaded to the website can be found on a CD, as of yet. However, Empty Room Blues, her father's song, can be found on Born In Newton County but there is only one guitar there.

First of all, let me start off by stating that I too, am a HUGE fan. I did tons of what you would refer to as research by looking up articles on the web and reading books like Crying For the Carolinas and Paul Olivar's, Blues Story.
Let me also preface this post by saying there is a ton of CRAP out on the internet!!!! Although Cora Mae has never said anything contrary to any info contained in both of the aforementioned books, she and I have scoffed at some of the stuff I brought to her attention.

The lies make me sick and it is for that reason I will post the following. God is for truth and the truth will be told. You know there is a song posted on our link, "Walk Around Heaven." There is a line that says, "Everybody talkin' bout heaven ain't going." Don't think you're gonna make it if you're tellin' lies; it ain't happenin'.

Myth #1:
Curley Weaver could not see in his old age and when he died he was in poor shape and he hadn't played guitar in years.

Truth:
Cora Mae watched him play a party the night before his death in Almon, Georgia, where his mother, Savannah Sheppard had lived. She said there was a man staying with her father and she believed that they both got in some sort of a scuffle the night before because the next day the man left and she had not seen him since. The next day her father was "talking all out of his head." According to Cora Mae, he mentioned a dead cousin of his and was talking about things that made no sense. Cora Mae said the man got jealous of Curley and poisened him. She said they melted some lard and made him drink it. He then vomitted some but I guess not everything came up. She admitted him in the Newton County hospital, she still remembers what room he was in, and he died the very next day.


Myth #2 and by far the most hillarious:
Curley Weaver's guitar, the Kay Kraft he is pictured with, has been discovered and verified by Paul Geremia. Someone at this now defunct website, http://kylehaynes.com, claimed that the new owner brought it to Cora Mae and asked her to examine it. (Click on this link and read the first hit http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=c...ver%27s+guitar) Cora Mae took it and said, "Yes, there's my father's initials CW inside the guitar where he wrote inside with lipstick. My brother stole it from my dad for gambling money and then pawned it.

Truth:
Where should I start?
First of all, how would Paul Geremia know which guitar Curley Weaver played, the guy probably told a lie on Paul Geremiah, too.

Second, Cora Mae said the only guitars she ever saw Buddy and Curley play, "Said G-I-B-S-O-N up there on top." I am sure others can expand on this, but people who made recordings often had an extra guitar for musicans to use if necessary, ie the Robert Johnson story about how he recorded with a loaner guitar. Joshua White, Curley Weaver and Buddy Moss were pictured with the same guitar! COME ON YOU MATH MAJORS, what are the possibliites of three people in such a short length of time recording with the same guitar? And look at Moss' blazer, more specifically his sleeves, it looks way too short! My theory is that perhaps they had blazers as well for the guys who recorded to take pictures.

Third, Cora Mae said no one ever brought a guitar for her to examine. Cora is a devout follower of Yaweh and not only reads, but DOES what the Bible says. If you know Cora Mae you know she does not and will not lie!!! If you don't know, ask someone who does, they'll tell you!

Fourth, Cora Mae does not have a brother, not even a half-brother. Cora was her mother's and her father's last and only child. However, when it came to claiming royalties, some other female claimed to be the daughter of Curley Weaver but Cora was the only one to come up with proof. Therefore, the unnamed female was denied.

Fifth, and by far the most hillarious, COME ON YOU GUITAR PLAYERS, who in the world writes their initials on their guitar? Need I say more? Even though those guys were heroes they were just like you and I. I have had at least ten, probably close to fifteen different guitars and have yet to write my initials on them, and whenever I go to bars or festivals they always stay in my direct line of sight. Who writes initials on their guitars, maybe a five year old? If you do I'm sorry but your just retarded! Curley Weaver lived by himself, where did he come up with lipstick?

Be like the Bereans in the Bible, don't take whatever I say as truth, go to the source and find out for yourself!

I do not know if he could see or not, I never even met him; I'm too young. All I can go by is what Cora Mae tells me. Cora Mae said that he could see, but I am not sure how well. Both she and her father, along with three of her children have an eye disease that is heriditary. Cora Mae and a couple her children have received eye transplants, and I should also note that whenever Cora Mae reads something she usually places three inches away from eyes, but she has a cataract. So she says he could see, but I am not sure how well.

Some books and articles have stated Curley's nickname was Slim Gordon. This too, is a lie.

Cora Mae said she met McTell and said he was a light skinned man. She said he played the guitar like he was frailing it, like strumming with your thumb.

Cora Mae has said she was very close with her father and that they would go to parties or stay with one another for a few days. She used to sing Wee Midnight Hours with her father at those same parties. You can find this song on Biograph's Pig N Whistle Red, Blind Willie McTell. Even though these are post war recordings, I still can not seperate the 6 from the 12 to learn them, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cora Mae mentioned Buddy Moss still played house parties after Curley's death and often came around to visit her. They remained very close until his death in the 80's.

Cora Mae said she never met Barbecue Bob, even though Walnut Grove is right around the corner. The only thing she knew is that a man whom she had spoken with that knew Bob said he was plowing in the field and looked over only to find Bob had hitched up the plowing mule and mentioned that he was leaving town. He never saw Bob again. I guess he moved to Atlanta. Cora Mae said Savannah Sheppard, her grandmother and also the lady credited with teaching Bob how to play, played upright piano and guitar in her lap and not the way we would, and without a slide.
