I guess this is similar to my thread about Elmore James. There are many parts of Muddy's career that are really great. In fact, there isn't one that I dislike.
What I'm trying to do, is hone in on particular period in Muddy's career. I think the plantation recordings are great! You know, the really early material? My problem is, that there are gaping holes in my knowledge of the career of the great man -- they need to be filled!
Most of my knowledge comes from this really great double CD set:
It's like hearing the slow evolution of the Electric, Chicago blues. As the set progresses, you start to hear amplified harp, drums, bass, guitar.
The assumption I make, is that the evolution started to occur when Muddy joined forces with chess. Is this right?
I love songs like:
Rollin’ Stone
Got my mojo working
Long-Distance Call
Honey Bee
Trouble No More
Country Boy
19 Years Old... Etc
I could list more, but I won't.
My point is, that I don't know from which period these songs came. I always seem to land on the time before, or after, that really golden period. I am looking for Little Walter, Cotton, Spann, Dixon, et al, at their best. That really Electric, heavily-distorted time! I would like to hear more from this period.
