What is your favorites (you can list any number , but by favorite order) strict Delta Blues guitar (only about the guitar the Blues and the Delta). Not concluding about the singing ! Not concluding about general guitar, only the raw and strict Delta Blues

my 7 right now in the specified order (may change at times...) are :
1. Charley Patton
2. Rube Lacy
3. Willie Brown
4. Tommy Johnson
5. Bukka White
6. Son House
7. Skip James

All the above written is in my opinion unless it is someone else's opinion, or a fact.

So many people say he wasn't a Delta Blues player,but for me Mississippi John Hurt ranks way above all the rest,followed by
Blind Willie McTell,Robert Johnson,Willie Brown,Charlie Patton and Blind Lemon Jefferson.

Like others, my list of Delta favorites is due to change from day-to-day depending on who I'm listening to, but longtime favorites who often find time in the CD changer...

Willie Brown
Tommy Johnson
Charley Patton
Ishmon Bracey
Big Joe Williams
Robert Petway

Not to be nitpicking here

But Blind Lemon Jefferson and Blind Willie McTell are not from the Delta. I might be wrong but I think Jefferson was from Texas and McTell from Atlanta, Georgia. Blind Lemon Jefferson was a heck of a player though. He had a unique fingerpicking style and not very "Texas blues" with a monotone bass that became more distinct later.

My Favourite delta players are:
Charlie Patton
Son House
Tommy Johnson
Bukka White
Robert Johnson
Mississippi Fred McDowell

I am not a big Robert Johnson fan actually, since I think he is highly overrated and most of his style can be heard in other people he were influenced by. But as many players I started with Robert Johnson, and his "Kind Hearted Woman" is a terrific song with great playing.

You can hear several influences in Robert Johnson, but he refiend it and thus became very influental in our time, more than any of the others.

Personaly for me Booker White and Son House are my favourits. Mostly because they recorded again in the 60's and made a bigger catalougue and better sounding records to listen too.

You can also hear a lot of the "modern" delta style originating from Mississippi FredMcDowell. I think about R.L Burnside and Robert Belfour among others.

Skip James is one of my favourites together with Misssissippi John Hurt, but they got such individual styles that I won't call it Delta blues.

In a strict sense you're right as the Johnsons (Tommy, Mager & LeDell), Chatmons and McCoys were more associated with the Jackson scene. However such a definition would also rule out Skip James and Miss. John Hurt. It sounds like by Delta you chiefly mean the Drew scene (built around Charlie Patton, Willie Brown and Dick Bankston) that has more of a down home feel.

What I call Delta ? Tommy Johnson is Delta Blues. Maggie Campbell as an example must be a Delta stuff. And so is Walter Vinson/Miss. Sheiks. Bo Carter is not because he doesn't have that sound. He could play anything but it's not his main style. Same for Miss. John Hurt and Robert Johnson. Skip James is uniq, the way I see it he is at the middle of the Delta and urban road.

Blind Willie McTell only made one record that I know of (Broke Donw Engine) that I would consider to be Delta Blues. The rest of his I would call eastern or Piedmont blues, no? I don't think many consider Lemon Jefferson as Delta Blues either, I don't know. Or is there a Brazos River delta over in Texas?

Sorry to have started so much controversy over the origins of these guys,wherever they came from,I loved their guitar playing anyhow!

And it was other forumites that I learned the little I know about those genres.

I like Delta Blues most, BUT I must admit those fingerpickers or pattern picjers or what ever they are could play other style if and when they want, but the reversve it not so true.
