The Best of Newport '57. Nice remastered sound. Sometimes "Samplers" are worth it. This is my intro to Eddie Costa. I know nothing about him. Any suggestions for further listening?

Yes, it's almost Christmas and as I know I'll have a Best Buy Gift Certificate from my Dear Old Dad, I know I'll be combing the racks for something or another- maybe that Tony Bennett long box I've had my eye on.

Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars, Volume 6. West Coast jazz at its zenith with a whole gang of talent -including the great one-Frank Rosolino.

Gotta love these Rumsey sessions! These series of sessions are without a doubt, one of the nicest acquisitions to my jazz collection this past year. If you're not already hip to the Lighthouse All-Stars, seriously think about adding some of there recordings to your jazz library in the upcoming year. I can't say enough good things about these guys.

(thought I was very organized - "place for everything, everything in it's place" - so I have no clue as to how the following happened)
Went thru several sealed boxes ysterday and found 8 unwrapped CD's purchased in March of '06 -
Story of this one........

Library of Congress sorting acetate tapes in 2/05. (From Voice of America)
They found this one with handwritten note from "T. Monk". labeled 'Carnagie Hall Jazz 1957'.

This was recorded on November 29th, 1957 at a show called "Thanksgiving Jazz" with other performers that evening: Billie Holliday, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Sonny Rollins, Chet Baker. Had to be a bargain evening when the highest priced ticket was $3.95.

24 pages of liner notes with some great history. Liner notes include comments about Miles Davis firing John 7 months before this night and John then giving up the junk and the booze. Bass was ahmed abdul-malik, shadow wilson on drums.

A very straight-ahead hard bop album. I suppose for 1967 it must have been a bit old-fashioned, but it really does swing. I've been meaning to check out more Barry Harris ever since I heard Lee Morgan's "Sidewinder" years ago, but never got round to it.

I bought almost all the Howard Rumsey when it was on those black , round vinyl thingies.

Still sounds as good today on CD as it did back in the 60's.

Kenny Burrell - Make Yourself A Soulful Little Christmas

I was in a local music store earlier today and was chatting with the store owner about this release. He happened to have an opened copy and placed it in cd player for me to listen to. I thought it was a pretty cool album. Released in 1966 on the Cadet label. Kenny definitely brings some coolness to Christmas favorites. This release will bring much enjoyment for many Christmas' to follow. Really glad I got this.

It's in my collection and is one of my favorites as well.

The Jazz Crusaders: Live At The Lighthouse '68

A soulful, swinging gig that made me appreciate once more what a really solid pianist Joe Sample could/can be when he's inspired. I'm particularly struck by his work on Eleanor Rigby, which his solo recasts into a fine vehicle for bluesy improvisation. This work is so vital compared to their crossover material of the 70s, which is where, ironically, I began listening to them (e.g. Southern Comfort, Those Southern Knights, Chain Reaction) and where I left off until last year.

What are the best of The Jazz Crusaders sets?

A safe, sane and Blessed Christmas and New Year to all my fellow BBFers.
