On June 25th, 1949, The term Rhythm and Blues replaced "Race Records" on the Billboard charts. Being a certified old fogey, R & B when it still rocked was the music I heard as a teenager and into my 20's. The stuff they call R & B now is the offspring of Barry White and his silk pajamas, for the most part. Race records, while it sounds too racist now to use as a term not only included groups as different as Louis Jordan and the Ink Spots, also cross-polinated with black gospel quartets and black gospel in general. I love it all.
I started this thread in honor of Minnesota Dave, who just joined us here. Maybe it will stir up some interest in a whole area of music that I love. The old black gospel can ride in The Chariot, and the purer blues fits here in psot-war blues. But, there's a whole body of work that is like that song that Clarence "Frogmouth" Henry used to sing: it "Ain't Got No home."
Renemalin said it was alright to start this thread here.
So who loves the old R & B, and what you're particular pleasure? Why not start a new topic on it. Who know who might be interested..
