A band is a business and is best run as a business.

Standard notation communicates everything you need. Reading music is easy. I can teach the basics in 5 minutes (Every Good Boy Does Fine, FACE, note symbols, rest symbols, time signatures, and key signatures via the circle of 5ths and circle of 4ths), so how hard can it be? Sight reading is nice, and will come with time and practice. A band that sight reads requires very little rehearsal, if any. If everything is charted, replacing a band member is much easier, too. And musicians that read well find there are many more gig opportunities.

Chord charts are even easier, and provide the basic necessities. They provide at a glance the basic structure of the song, the intro, verse chords and bars, bridge, etc.

You get fired for drugs and booze on a regular job. Rehearsals and gigs are real jobs. The fact that the clientele may be drinking in no way negates this, any. Personally, I have no problem with a couple of beers during a gig. With over 40 years playing professionally, though, I find that the safest policy is zero tolerance, and that's the rule in my bands. Strict adherence to this has never hurt. I can't say the same for relaxing it. Maybe a beer during the last set, and all you want after the gig. Some musicians can't drink. If this is the case, I find it's best that everyone refrain.

Homework is essential. If everyone learns their stuff first, your rehearsals will be orders of magnitude more effective. 25 tunes for a 2 or 3 hour rehearsal are not at all unusual if everyone is prepared. Singers should work out harmonies beforehand if need be, as should horns. With time and practice, this, too, comes together.

Lest ye thinks I wield a whip (that only happens when she's wearing leather, black lace, and manacles .... hmmmm..... womanacles? ), if it comes to this, it's time to change. Good musicians know their trade, listen, cooperate, work hard, offer suggestions sparingly and politely, and have no ego in band settings. I've been in bands where someone was constantly ordering everyone around. The BEST bands I've played with had none of this. Giving or receiving, the aggravation just isn't worth it. Abusing weak musicians won't make them good, and lambasting great musicians won't make them any better.
