I went through previous topics in the jazz club, thinking that I'd seen a discussion on this topic, but couldn't find it. From what I remember, almost no one responded. Tonight, as my random choice of a jazz album I ended up pulling out "The Great Ladies Sing Gershwin." I don't remember ever seeing it, but I must have bought it somewhere. The singers are Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, Shirley Horn, Dinah Washington and Betty Carter. I've heard very little by Nina Simone, and even less by Shirley Horn and Betty Carter. The stuff I've heard by Dinah Washington, other than one CD of hers that I bought (and haven't listened to in forever) I associate her more with pop music, and duets with Brook Benton.
The CD got me thinking about who my favorite female jazz singers are. Actually, I can answer my own question without a lot of reflection. In the short amount of time that I've been on here, I don't remember a single CD be a female jazz singer mentioned as one that's been played recently. I know the jazz contingent in here is small (but choice) but I was wondering if anyone else likes any female jazz singers. And why.
I'll come back on and take my first choice, Ella Fitzgerald, next time I post. But, feel free to take her if you like. I got more where she came from..
