I am currently watching a wonderful video my drum teacher Carmen Castaldi lent me entitled: "Legends Of Jazz Drumming, Volume 1: 1920-1950.

At the moment, I'm watching my computer screen

, but I've very recently watched a DVD I picked up called "Jumpin' and Jivin'" It's a collection of short films made for Visual jukeboxes of the 40's and 50's. It has a lot of great, rare footage, including Louis Jordan, Fats Waller, The Count Basie Orchestra, Gene Krupa, the Delta Rhythm Boys, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington and Billy Eckstein.

That sounds great! And similar to a ten-movie "jazz" DVD set I purchased a while ago.

Recently TCM played some of the "B" movies made at Columbia in the early Forties starring a blooming young Ann Miller. Two are of interest to jazz fans.

Reveille with Beverly (1943) is loosly based on a real radio DJ show broadcast for the troops. What story there is merely serves as a frame for musical performances by

Duke Ellington Orchestra: Take the A Train
Count Basie Orchestra: One O'clock Jump
Bob Crosby Orchestra: Big Noise From Winnetka
Frank Sinatra: Night and Day

Also appearing are Freddie Slack with Ella Mae Morse and the Mills Brothers

Jam Session (1944) also has a slight framing story for

Louis Armstrong: I Can't Give You Anything but Love
Charlie Barnet Orchestra: Cherokee
Glen Gray Orchestra: a fine jump tune whose name escapes me

Also orchestras of Jan Garber, Teddy Powell, Alvino Rey. The Pied Pipers sing a number too.

These movies will probably turn up again on TCM in the near future.
