I just bought Prince Buster's 'Hard Man Fe Dead' on vinyl - typical Jamaican vinyl - wrong track listing on the sleeve - but brilliant

You don't get that trouble with Blood and Fire!

you got that right! when it comes to reggae reissues, blood & fire records stands head and shoulders above the competition. beautiful packages, informative liner notes, rare pictures, impeccable research.

oh and the music they reissue is pretty tops, too!

Toots and the Maytals Anthology
All the best tracks are here but maybe not in the best order.

I also got some early Bob Marley tracks, from a friend, where he sings White Christmas in an Elvis voice. Its got me hooked and I need to get the CD somewhere

Well I never expected this section to come up.

I don't like reggae and I don't listen to it but if Prince Buster qualifies I've been listening to some of his records lately.

"Dance Cleopatra" is my favorite.

Prince Buster does qualify - in fact if you asked him he'd tell you he invented reggae

So if you like Prince Buster then you like reggae, at least some of it.

I remember sometime during the early 80s I was in New York looking thru the Village Voice for some Reggae acts to see. The Mighty Diamonds were playing at a small club that I can't remember the name (great show). What I will never forget though is that the ad called their music "Kingston Blues". Think about it, the message in reggae is so much like the message in blues. Reggae/Kingston Blues... couldn't be better.

Another thought... has anyone heard this CD? I can't begin to have a thought what it is like. What I do know is that Toots helps Willie out on this.

I never much listened to Reggae beyond Bob Marley and maybe Peter Tosh.
But last year I saw a TV Program - Willie Nelson & Friends - there were 2 songs with Toots Hibbert - Still is still moving & Pressure drop(Ben Harper killer guitar solo). I was instantly hooked and am listening to Toots & the Maytals almost daily. I downloaded concerts from tela.sugarmegs.org/ and just love them.
Reggae rules!

Also, whenever Errol Blackwood plays around here I make sure not to miss him

I just finished listening to rock-steady Dennis Brown, "The Legend Continue". Actually it's a awsome video filmed in JA. Dennis sings all his hits.

Going back to 'Kingston Blues'. The first time I went to Chicago (about '87-'88) one of my good friends who liked blues and reggae as much as I do told me to check out a club called Kingston Mines when I got there. That's all he said. When I got to Chicago and got a "Reader" and found out that Kingston Mines was a blues club I was disappointed.
That is until I read further and realized I was going to see Otis Rush that night.

At least 80% of the songs that Dennis sang on the video could be easily put to blues music. Put Junior Marvin (from JA) or Donald Kinsey (Chicago bred) on guitar and you got a Kingston Blues song; or would it be a Chicago blues song.

Heh. After blues, reggea makes up the biggest proportion of my collection.

If I'm listening to dub, the real favourites have to be Sly and Robbie's 'Adventures in Dub' or the classic 'King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown'. Dub doesn't come any better than that.

Bit of early Bob Marley - ie the classic stuff with Peter Tosh, produced by Scratch Perry - Little Axe and African Herbsman. Probably the discs I listen to most though is Jimmy Cliff's seminal, self-titled album or Scratch Perry's 'Arkology', or even 'Time Boom X De Devil Dead'.

Cultures 'Two Sevens Clash', The Congoes 'Heart of the Congoes' and a host of others. There's also wonderful disc from Trojan called 'Funky Jamaica' which features reggea covers of soul/funk greats - stuff like 'Ball of Confusion', 'War', 'Shaft' and of course, the Maytall's doing 'Funky Kingston'. Always goes down a treat.

Oh yeah, Kanker - that disc rocks.

Jackie Mittoo, the Jamaican Booker T and Ike Turner rolled into one. Just brilliant. Such a shame he died so young.
