Although this jazz standard has been done to death, I still like the simple little intro to "Autumn Leaves."

I'll add the intro to "Children of the Night" as done by The Jazz Messengers.
Shorter.
Rest of the tune is OK, but that intro, I'd love to live there.
Lot of those Blakely sides had great intros.
Mosiac. It could go on for days.

I love the intros to most of Cole Porter's tunes, especially, IMO, All Through The Night and I Get a Kick Out of You .

I think Trane ran everything through intros that he dug. Then he just stayed there.

Two introductions I really like, both by Kenny Burrell, are the chord melody intro to "Since I Fell For You" from the Round Midnight album, and the intro to "Merry Christmas Baby" appearing on Have Yourself A Soulful Little Christmas.

I still recall that day in the 1970s when I was brousing around a record store in Berkeley, and they played Stolen Moments from Oliver Nelson's Blues and the Abstract Truth. As soon as I heard that theme, I knew that it was going to be the sh#t.

Trane�s Blue Trane
Miles� Milestones

Sherman: You've probably heard the outake of Koko, where they start to play the Cherokee theme and a voice comes in, "hold it, hold it." (as in we don't want to pay any royalties today).

Such was born a classic intro and original Charlie Parker composition.

We have another thread on Bud Powell. He is somebody who can grab you right away with an intro line and never let you go. A few that come to mind are Tempus Fugit and Dance of the infidels. I still recall the first time that I heard Bud play those opening lines. Damn!

In that regard, I have always wondered about those three extraordinary takes of Bird of Paradise. The first take is clearly All the Things You Are, and the rest is pure genius from one of the greatest spontaneous composers who ever lived.

What I wonder is whether Bird was receiving the same sort of encouragement then from Dial that he got in 1945 from Savoy: change the theme or head to avoid copyright obligations?

I have to agree with Muddy on "Stolen Moments" from Oliver Nelson. No matter how many times I play that cut, I never tire of it. The familiar refrain which is often repeated by Freddie Hubbard and others always get me. Another song that is probably considered a classic war horse is Nat Adderley's "Work Song". I find myself humming that everytime I pop that in the player. How about Miles' "So What"?
