Carmell Jones: Mosaic Select. Some superlative playing from this neglected artist. Both "The Remarkable Carmell Jones" & "Business Meeting" are exciting, swinging affairs featuring Harold Land, Frank Strazerri, and Gary Peacock, the latter also featuring a larger ensemble with charts by Gerald Wilson. The set also includes the successful "Jazz Impressions of Folk Music"album session. All in all, a solid four stars and a fine addition to any collection.

Billie Holiday: The Ultimate Collection. Really nice two disc survey of her career in fine sound plus a DVD for $39.00 list from ASV. IMO worth it for the DVD and convenience. It's perfect for newbie Jazz listeners as well.

Bill Evans: The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings, 1961, Disc 2.
IMO this belongs on the short list of all-time great performances. Scott LoFaro 's work is simply breathtaking and Paul Motian's drumming is a clinic in and of itself-perfection. These three have an uncanny telepathy and produced a recording that rewards repeated listening.. As Duke would say-...."beyond category."

Herbie Hancock: The Complete Blue Note Sixties Sessions, Disc 4 "Maiden Voyage". A highlight of the Blue Note Catalog and one of the all time great jazz albums. Tony Williams' drumming on this album is simply breathtaking and indeed it can be safely said of all hands present that they "brought their A game".
As for the balance of the box set, the highlights include Cantaloupe Island, Watermelon Man, Dolphin Dance, the Inventions and Dimensions session and Empyrean Isles a.o. Taken all in all, Herbie's Blue Note sessions represent an early career peak that IMO makes an important addition to any music lovers library.

Count Basie The Golden Years. A 4 CD compilation-Live, Small Group, Big Band, Vocalists. Acquired as a cutout via an Amazon affiliate @$11 including S&H. The only serious gripe I have is that there's not more small group-as in live Basie- here. The sound quality is variable-the live recordings of the Big Band at Santa Monica sound too compressed for my taste while the Montreux 1975 Big Band tapes give Butch Miles' cymbals an overly splashy effect. There's plenty of Joe Turner here including a memorable version of "TV Mama" three tracks from The Bosses and big band dates. Actually, I imagine any four CDs would have what a given listener would regard as regrettable omissions. Overall, an excellent value for money.

Sonny Rollins: The Freelance Years. A 5CD set. The years 1956-58 represents a creative peak in the early career of Sonny Rollins. These Riverside and Contemporary recordings contain two of his most important albums as a leader "Way Out West" and "Freedom Suite" and ALL of his output for the two labels as leader and sideman. Rollins performs with such artists as Kenny Dorham, Thelonious Monk,Max Roach, Abby Lincoln, Sonny Clark, Clark Terry a.m.o. IMO, this is indispensable listening for any Rollins fan and can currently be purchased from Amazon or its partners at prices ranging from $19.99 @ Newbury Comics to $53.99 from Amazon. This makes for great listening at any price and is one of my most played box sets.

Oscar Peterson/Lionel Hampton "Complete Quartets and Quintets" on Verve

I just bought this, and I'm not sure this is going to be my cup of tea. I've only heard a chunk of disc 1, and the instrumentation is a little sparse for my tastes. It practically screams "Give me a sax or a trumpet to break the monotony"....hopefully the balance of the box set is more to my liking.

Bill Evans: The Last Waltz. LIve Sets from the last months of Bill Evans' life and it's beautiful music indeed. I can pull out any one of the eight discs and hear something wonderful, whether it's Evans' own compositions or an American Standard. There's so much creativity of a high order going on that the inevitable repetitions of material avoid redundancy. I can't tell you yet which version of Turn Out The Stars or Nardis or RE: Person I Knew I like best. A great antidote for whatever is bedevlin' you.

Bennie Green - Mosaic Select
Not wanting Jeff to dominate the discussion here, BTW good work Jeff! I'm winding down on trombonist Bennie Green's Mosaic collection. I picked this up very recently taking advantage of there January sale. Folks, if you have any interest in Mosaic Records and they have a sale which isn't too often, it would be good advice to take advantage if you have some spare cash. These guys do an amazing job producing there box set collections. End of plug.

The album is hard bop based with fine work from Green. Alot of solo space for Bennie here. Think Curtis Fuller/JJ Johnson and if you admire these guys you should have no issues here. Plus no trumpet players which provides for good extending soloing. The personnel is top notch. A few names less familiar. You have Sonny Clark who plays on the entire collection. Gene Ammons who plays on the Soul Stirrin' session. He's quite good which is no big surprise here. Charlie Rouse who plays on the Back On The Scene date is excellent. Stanley Turrentine who plays on the Ike Quebec date Congo Lament is quite good. Can't forget Ike Quebec either. This may be my favorite Quebec date, hands down. Obviously no lack of talent here from the tenor sax contingent. Overall, no big surprises here just good music and that works for me.

At this very moment: David Oquendo & Roswell Rudd - El Enquentro; Mojito Records 245 360 122-2. Trombone and guitar w. some vocals. Nice, and I hope that doesn't damn it with faint praise! Roswell loves to do duoes such as this: two guys playing in a relaxed fashion, and digging each other's company. Thanks Ros.

Duke Ellington: Never No Lament/The Blanton Webster Band, 1940-42
I never tire of this collection. This three disc set includes some of the most justly acclaimed Ellington releases including Cotton Tail, Ko Ko, Jack The Bear, Conga Brava, In a Mellotone and that's just disc 1 ! Besides the redoubtable Mr Webster, there's some marvellous playing by Johnny Hodges (See Warm Valley). Did I mention Take The A Train, Harlem Air-Shaft, Just A Sittin and A Rockin', Sophisticated Lady, I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good? IMO this belongs as a cornerstone for the collection of any serious fan of American music.

The ideal companion is Duke Ellington At Fargo, Live-1940 (Complete) which features some fabulous music for dancers . All things considered the sound quality is surprisingly good and the playing is heavenly.

I've been buying the Proper sets of late not the greatest quality mind you but full of lots of tracks that have been OOP for what seems like forever and at a great price my last few included Brit jazz giants Ronnie Scott and Tubby Hayes both well worth the �9.99 price tag from Amazon (other sites are available).

The Proper box is a great introduction as it catches Tubbs in lots of situations (with Vic Lewis, Jack Parnell, Jimmy Deuchar, Dizzie Reece, Victor Feldman and his own orchestra, quartet and quintet) you can almost hear him grow as a player on it, the sides are all from 1954-56 and present Tubby in his prime.

I'd recommend 'Mexican Green', 'Tubby Hayes and The All Stars; Return Visit (with Jimmy Gloomy, Roland Kirk, Walter Bishop Junior & Louis Hayes recorded in New York)', 'Tubbs' and '100% Proof' as good solid places to start.

I've listened to a "Highlights" compilation and if that's any indication, it should be a superb Bill Evans Trio set. IIRC it was a "Grammy" Award winner. I plan on purchasing it myself. I found the title track, Like Someone In Love and I Do It For Your Love particularly rewarding. All in all, it looks to be a superior bargain.

Great music! But I like the concerts recorded a bit later at the Keystone Korner even more. They are available in full on two box sets: The Last Waltz and Consecration.
