Over on the Steve Hoffman Music Forum board, there has been a thread about Elmore James that I have participated in for a while. Yesterday, J.A.W. (I think he's a member here, too) posted all of the tracks from the Fire/Enjoy/Bobby Robinson sessions that have been issued on 3 CDs on the Relic label. In turn, I took that list of tracks and organized it in alphabetical order, and then matched it up with the P-Vine 3CD box set "Something Inside of Me: The Complete Fire/Enjoy Sessions" issued in the late 80s.
The Relics contain 65 total tracks; the P-Vine contains 51 tracks. So why the major discrepancy? I suspect the answer in part may be that Relic duplicates 10 stereo tracks that it (apparently) also issues in mono.
BTW, I didn't 'steal' this post from the Hoffman board. Since I wrote it, I guess I won't have any world-famous sound engineers issuing cease-and-desist orders on me.
The following tracks show up only on the Relics, and don’t match up with any of the P-Vine tracks:
*Dust My Broom (unreleased version) Relic 7040
*Everyday I Have the Blues Relic 7026
*Find My Kind of Woman (unreleased) Relic 7026
Find My Kind of Woman (take 2) Relic 7097

*Talk to Me Baby Relic 7040
*The Twelve Year Old Boy Relic 7040
You Know You're Wrong (unreleased) Relic 7026
The following tracks show up only on the P-Vine, and don’t match up with any of the Relic tracks:
Hand in Hand P-Vine 2182 (shown as Take 4)
I’ve Got A Right To Love My Baby P-Vine 2182
Mean Mistreatin’ Mama (take 3) P-Vine 2181
She’s Got To Go P-Vine 2182
I’m strongly suspicious of the 10 stereo tracks on the Relics, I doubt they are different takes than on the P-Vine, either that or there are mono versions of those same 10 tracks that show up only on the Relics;
There are indeed 3 songs shown as ‘unreleased’ that appear to be exclusive to the Relics;
There is also the possibility that a few tracks on either the Relics or the P-Vine that are the same tracks, just sporting different (mis)titles.

‘Dust My Broom’ on 2180 and 2182 might be ‘swapped’ to match with the Relics; I’m assuming that the alternate take of ‘Stranger Blues’ is on 7040, but that also could be ‘swapped’ to match Relic;
P-Vine only has one ‘Got To Move’, while Relic has two; Are the two Relic versions two different takes, or the same take repeated?
P-Vine only has one ‘I Gotta Go Now’, while Relic has two; Are the two Relic versions two different takes, or a stereo and a mono, or the same take repeated identically?
P-Vine shows 3 takes of ‘Mean Mistreatin’ Mama’, although Takes 1 and 2 are combined as one track; Take 1 is a false start; Take 3 does not show up on any of the Relic discs
‘Find My Kind of Woman’ has just one take on P-Vine; it has two takes on Relic; I’ve arbitrarily assigned the P-Vine version as matching with 7026, but it could be with take 2 on 7097, I just don’t know which is correct since I don’t own the Relics and can’t do a sound comparison
‘Everyday I Have The Blues’ has just one version on P-vine; it has two versions on Relic; I’ve arbritrarily assigned the P-Vine version as matching with 7097; Are the two Relic versions two different takes, or a stereo and a mono, or the same take repeated identically?
Relic shows 3 versions of ‘Look On Yonder Wall’, while P-Vine shows 2 takes, one listed as with ‘wrong lyrics’; I have arbitrarily matched the ‘wrong lyrics’ version with 7097
My next step is to compare the Relics and the P-Vine to the on-line discography at http://home.online.no/~smpeders/ind-elmo.htm to see what we learn, but that’s time-consuming, and will have to wait for another day.
